When we went to Synergy, it was a $99 sign up fee and $55 a month. So that would be $759 a year...which seems like a lot to me - especially since I've never been one to work out, so I don't even know if I would be able to figure out the machines there.

The other alternative I was thinking of was Lucille Roberts. Can anyone give me specific reasons there didn't like it there?

I was a member of Lucille for over 5 years. But if you say you are the type of person to rarely work out, I think Lucille Roberts may be the perfect gym to start out at. The reasons I did not like the gym was b/c it was overly crowded, and I had to always wait for a treadmill or elliptical. There isnt as much equipment so if the gym is crowded, you will wait. There is also a sign up sheet--1/2 hour per cardio machine. That is it. Their equipment is also very old...some they had updated, but some seriously needed to be thrown away and replaced already.

I liked the gym b/c it was what I was used to, I was close to home and it was all women (for the exception of one or two men). And most of all when I subscribed for a 2-year membership which came to $300, it was technically $11/month. That was Cheap!

Then my membership expired and I knew I didnt want to re-join, I was just sick and tired of complaining and not looking forward to going, that I knew I needed a change. I was skeptical but I did it and am happy I did.

I went to the one in Massapequa, by the way.......and sorry for such the long book here. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

thank you!

Here is a link to the Kings Park schedule. At my Sportime they change the schedule for the summer, fall and spring seasons.

Lori, if Sportime doesn't work out, the LR I looked at in Manhatan did have motnhly rates. I decided against it, b/c the classes didnt' really work with my hours & train schedule. And it wasn't that close to wrok, so I knew I'd never go.

My mom goes to the one in Plainview & likes it b/c she mostly does classes & the treadmill & she is able to go during the day, so I don't think they have the sign up sheet there at that time.

Re: Joining a Gym

Lori - had no idea you lived so close to me (I'm in East Northport).

DH joined Sportime awhile back and he liked it (the KP location). I had checked it out and it definitely seemed like it wasn't overwhelming as far as skinny lil things prancing around LOL.

I belong to LR in Commack and I liked it until I had kids. They don't take children under a year old in their daycare and for me the night times don't work for me. I got tired of always having to wait for a machine and there aren't any classes after 7:15.

Sooooooooooooooooooo, I joined Golds which is 2 seconds from my house and I love it. Its definitely expensive but honestly, worth every dime. The hours are fantastic and the classes are amazing. I thought I would be much more intimidated and it would be more of a meat market but its not. I like the fact that they have a women's gym there so if you don't want testosterone running all over you you can hit the ladies area and be more comfortable.

I looooove my Gold's gym, too. WaMu participates in GlobalFit, which is a discount program with health clubs, so it only costs me $31/month.

You should check to see if your company has any discounts. Also, most health coverage will ggive you $$$ back if you go X amount of times per month.

Re: Joining a Gym

I have belonged to two Gold's so far, they are by far, the best!

I didn't like NYSC too much. The equipment is very limited. But I guess it depends on which one you go to.

Lori, I believe I can go to any Sportime. If you'd like we can go together to a class at Kings Point after my work day one day.

When I looked at the Kings Park schedule, there was a class that interested me.

Re: Joining a Gym

I just joined Synergy - to be honest, I won the membership but was thinking of selling it. I went to check out the gym first with DH (without telling them I already had the free membership) and it looked good. It was very clean, lots of equipment and this particular location is new (less than a year old I think). The regular membership is one year unlimited use with one personal training session for $599. If we both joined, they were going to give it to us for $500 each.

Now that I've been going a couple weeks, I really like it. There are no kids just hanging around, the people are really friendly and there are people of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels there. The personal training session really helped because now I know what I'm doing and I don't feel lost. It's working out well for me. They also have day care mornings and evenings, and are open fairly long hours.

What location is that?
When we went to one in Fort Salonga, they told us completely different prices...and nothing about a personal training session
