Jonathan's Birth Story: 5/9/08
My first sign that I was going into labor started at work on Wednesday. It was about 3pm when I started feeling this nagging ache in my lower abs and back. If I had not been pregnant I would have thought that AF was on the way.
I finished out the day, and by the time I got home I was having real contractions. However, they were sporadic and only lasted about 2-3 hours.
I woke up Thursday morning feeling fine so I went back to work, only to start getting contractions while on the LIRR. They were VERY far apart, and my job is actually closer to my hospital than my home so I stayed at work for a few hours.
By noon my boss thought I was crazy and sent me home in a car. I didn't want to be home alone so I went to my parent's house instead and waited for DH.
By Thursday night I was having steady contractions. When I got to the point that they were 5 minutes apart and lasting 1 minute for 1 hour I went to the hospital as instructed. It was about 1:30 a.m. on Friday when we got there.
At the triage exam I was told I was 3-4 cm and 80% effaced. They kept me monitored for about 2 1/2 hours. When I didn't make much progress, I was told that it was too early to admit me. So DH and I went to DH's brother's apt - he lives closer to the hospital than we do - to wait it out there.
By 8 a.m. I was in much more pain, and decided that I wanted to go back to the hospital. I was hoping to be at 6cm, but I was holding steady at 4cm.
I was told to start walking around the hallways to help speed the labor along. So DH and I wandered the hospital hallways for another few hours and then came back for another exam.
At ,my next exam it was about 11:30 and I really had my fingers crossed to hear that I had made some progress (especially since I was in so much pain). I was now 90% effaced. However, I was holding steady at 4 DARN cm!!!!
By about 12pm I was ready for my epidural (turned out to be a blessing). A little bit later the doctor broke my water, but the epidural had not kicked in. I won't lie ladies, the pain was BAD.
By the next contraction the epidural was working, and I was feeling better because the docotor estimated that I would have the baby within 5-6 hours.
The next few things are a blur. My labor and delivery nurse saw my monitor and did not look happy. She immediately called for the doctor, who immediately called every nurse on the floor to my room.
I heard them tell me that the baby's heart rate was down and that I was going to be given oxygen to help the baby. There were about 12 people surrounding me, and everyone was doing something different to me.
The doctor ordered my on my right side, left side, all fours, anything to get the baby to jiggle and get the heart rate up, but nothing worked. Next, thing I hear is the doctor ordering everyone to get prepped for an emergency c-section, and for someone to get DH into scrubs.
Turns out that because I already had the eppidrual in place I did not need to go under full anesthesia. Instead they quickly increased the dosage for the surgery and I was able to stay awake.
I heard a lot orders being yelled and felt a lot of pressure, pulling and tugging in my abdomen, and then I felt a sudden emptiness. They had the baby out in about 90 seconds. In fact, they got the baby so fast, DH had not even made it to the room yet. However when the baby came out I didn't hear any crying which made me VERY nervous.
Jonathan was not breathing when he came out and needed to be resuccitated. They did it quickly. Soon I heard him crying and they brought him over to me to see.
I spent the next few hours in recovery while they examined Jonathan. Once Jonathan's exam's were over DH was able to go see him in the NICU and he took some pictures for me.
We finally got to hold him the next day. He is doing much better. Turns out that he got tangled up in the umbilical cord - he had it around his neck - and that he may have swallowed some merconium (not sure of the spelling).
He is now breathing on his own and even took three bottles yesterday (I don't have any milk yet). He will stay in the NICU today because he is still on anti-biotics but I hope to have have by my bedside soon, and to take him home on Tuesday.
Thanks for reading. I will try and post some pics on the pregnancy forum today.
