Jordana starts solids on Saturday so...

What do I need to know? How much should I feed her?
What do I need to get? Any brand of rice? Do I really need a high chair or can I start her in the bumbo.

She is currently breastfed. I know I should start her in the morning.

I can't believe she is 5 months already Chat Icon

That she's going to make some really funky faces - so have your camera ready.

Veggies first, than fruit.

One type of solids for 3 days to make sure there is no reaction. Expect some really funky diaper colors.

eta. Good Luck!! You're going to have a blast!

Not sure if you're planning this anyway, but I would mix breastmilk into the cereal. You can use water but she's used to your breastmilk.

Re: Jordana starts solids on Saturday so...

I would definitely get out the high chair to start.
In the beginning my ped. told me to start with regular single grain Gerber rice cereal. We started with 2 tablespoons and mix that with about 3-4 tablesppons of formula (in your case BM) so it's liquidy enough for them to start out, but solid enough where it's different. Then after a few days you can use less liquid and it will be more mushy as she gets used to it.

Start when she is not insanely hungry- otherwise the first time will be a screaming disaster (like ours was Chat Icon )

Sit directly in front of her when you feed her and hold the spoon way back (think airplane) and bring it in so she can watch the spoon coming towards her. It should definitely help.

And that's all I can think of for now.

ETA: Intruduce the cereals a week at a time to make sure that there are no allergies. We did one week rice, next barley and then oatmeal. Now that we are on the 4th week we're mixing it up and next week we will start fruits.

Make the cereal very runny. My ped recommended 1 tbsp of cereal mixed with 3 tbsp of formula/BM.

And I second Cheryl's recommendation that you not start when she's starving... it'll take her a few tries to get it and if she's really hungry it's just going to frustrate her.

Have the camera ready and have fun!

I notice the best consistancy is 1 tablespoon of rice cereal to 4 tablespoons of formula. I tried to feed Luka in the bouncy seat the few times but this last time I broke out the high chair and it was easier for me to feed him and he liked to sit their aswell. The faces she will make will be priceless. I think what everyone else has posted is good advise.
