Judgement Spinoff/Sorority question...How did you choose pledges?
I know many of us answered that we were in sororities during college, and all of this talk about judging got me thinking about how we chose pledges.
I know we had rush and talked to potential pledges to see what they were like, but I feel like realistically we judged based on how they looked. Really can you know someone having talked to them for 3 hours? Or really about 10 mins per pledge? I know when we voted on pledges we even said things like "she's cute," etc...And there are many reasons why...Because we didn't know them to make a judgement call based on personality...
Yes, it's wrong, and this will get responses like "That's why I didn't join a sorority!" but I also think that sense of belonging can be important, especially at a large school.

Yeah, but by your own admission, it's belonging because of how you look of an image you projecdt, not ebcause of who you really are.
I wasn't in a sorority, I had no desire to be. Did you hear the story about the sorority that kicked out all of the overweight and minority members? It was in the news a few weeks ago

I guess this was really a question for people who were in sororities to comment on the choosing of pledges. I only know what happened during the process for my sorority at my college.
But yes, once I got to know everyone I became friends with my 3 best friends (obviously because we had more in common than how we look). There are people you naturally gravitate towards, and I wasn't friends with everyone in my sorority.
And as for the kicking out, I suppose if they never voted them in they wouldn't have to kick them out. It's not right, but I don't know why they would vote someone in and then change their mind.

Yeah, but I wanted to bring up the sorority that kicked out all minority and overweight members. It supports what you're saying.
But it's not just sororities, everyone chooses friend at least initially because of how they look.

The sorority wasn't doing well, and so the national board of the sorotiy came to this college and interviewed all of the members and then kicked out 16 girls who were not "dedicated" based on those interviews, and it happenned to be ONLY girls who were not white and thin, and ALL girls who were not white and thin

Re: Judgement Spinoff/Sorority question...How did you choose pledges?
having just come back from school in colorado when I transfer to SUNY- Stony Brook- I can honesly say I was not dressed the same as anyone else at rush week
I was pretty covered up and conservative compared to 99% of the other girls-
I got into all 4 sororites-
once I was in- I can honestly say we chose people based on looks and they way they acted at rush- where they out going- would they fit in with us etc
unless someone knew them already, or where friends with a sister- then we took that into account
not everyone was pretty, not everyone was skinny- not everyone had stuff in common with everyone- but we all got along for the most part

Re: Judgement Spinoff/Sorority question...How did you choose pledges?
It's impossible to get to know pledges over the course of two to three rush parties, when there's maybe 200 or so girls to meet. So yeah, you chit chat, say she's "cute" at blackball, and she gets a bid. It happens and I won't lie and say I didn't gravitate towards the girls who were my "style", I definitely did! I think we all did, but my sorority was very mixed, all different, so it led to a lot of diverse pledges.
It turns out there are always a few "cute" girls you were dead wrong about during rush and eventually became the most hated in the sorority. And the same girls you blackballed one semester who eventually got bids the next one and were awesome sisters.
