Julianne Hough costume controversy

Julianne Hough is under major criticism for coloring her face black to dress as "Crazy Eyes" from Orange is the New Black....

I don't know, to me it's just a costume, i guess i'm not seeing how this is really "offensive"...

Re: Julianne Hough costume controversy

Blackface is certainly offensive. The practice has historical roots that are exploitative and insulting. Watch the movie Bamboozled...it really shows the problems with blackface. There are actually equity rules about white actors performing in blackface.

I find this really offensive.

But there is no intent to make fun of or mock anyone. She's dressing up as a character on a show for Halloween. I don't see how it's offensive. It's in good fun and a clever costume.

I don't see this as offensive at all, it's a particular character from a TV show she wanted to be. She's not in "black face" I honestly feel she didn't have the intent to be mean.

Re: Julianne Hough costume controversy

Just because she is not outright mocking African American people doesn't make it right. I have a problem with white people painting their face black period. Because it is a historically contested practice, and largely symbolic of a period of time when it wasn't just a silly Halloween costume, I think there needs to be some degree of sensitivity. There was a long time where people dressed in blackface to create caricatures of people of color, and that is a really painful memory for a lot of people. So just because she didn't mean it maliciously, it doesn't mean that its okay. It doesn't have to be a minstrel show for it to be wrong, IMO. There are tons of other costumes, and other characters from OTNB, I just think this was in poor taste.

Yea but Crazy Eyes is the best character on that show! Chat Icon

Obviously we can agree to disagree here. I truly don't think it's offensive, it's just a costume.

Julianne Hough costume controversy

I don't think it's offensive per se...but I think it was poorly executed. I think if she made her hair dark and wore the correct color jumpsuit it would have been more authentic and not offensive to anyone.

Julianne Hough costume controversy

I took numerous college classes on African American history being o.e of my concentrations is African American Literature. I truthfully do not believe this is offensive. Halloween costumes allow people to portray other characters. My friend posted pictures from a Halloween party last weekend where her African American male roommate had used pale foundation an dressed as Lady Gaga. Why is that not offensive? I do understand about the history of blackface because it was a way for white people to mock African Americans, however that is not what that actress was doing. The Wayans brothers dressed as white women in " white chicks" and acted as airheads. Yet again, not offensive. It was a Halloween costume. People need to lighten up.

I agree with everything, well said.

Also she isn't stupid she was likely looking for media attention, she is a media whore iMO I think her "relationship" with Ryan Seacrest highlights that well.

1. The scenarios you used are not the same to be used in comparrison--not by a long shot--sorry. Im not trying to go into a history lesson either..its just not the same for many reasons.

2. The problem is that not everyone see the harm in it but some do... and once you decide to be a public figure you always have to be two steps ahead not you end up in situations like JH is.

Not trying to Chat Icon at all, just curious....how does a black male dressing in white face (pale foundation,) to portray a white female singer differ from a white woman dressed as a black male (by using dark foundation) to portray a black actor, especially considering the entire group was dressed as cast members from that show?

Our friends came over for dinner football tonight (the wife is black) and her husband brought up this "controversy"....she happened bring up a good point. She was not offended and this is her rationale. While it's important to recognize the injustices that have happened throughout history, by making a big deal over somebody who dressed as a character for Halloween, we are actually further dividing races.

Re: Julianne Hough costume controversy

I think the difference is that there wasn't an offensive practice of black men dressing as white women in the past.

It has a lot to do with how privilege works, who has historically held the power, and which racial group has historically been the subject of ridicule in the entertainment industry.

EXACTLY!!!!!

My DH and I (both in our 40's) can't understand how ANYONE doesn't know this is blatantly offensive!!!

When I was in HS in the 80's I knew this was as bad as saying the "N" word. OMG... no WAY would I EVER.

Fast forward to my first yr teaching (97) in an all white district (I think there was one or two African American kids in a HS of 800), 5 kids dressed like the Jackson 5 in blackface for Halloween!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I was appauled!!!! Just speechless!!! None of the students were in my classes and my students didn't see the big deal... I tried to tell them why, I really did Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon One of the same students didn't believe that Elie Weisel was one of the young boys in the famous photo at Buchenwald concentration camp... The insensitivity and downright ignorance and racism of people is just astounding!!

She's a stupid ASS!!!!

ETA: I did not read the entire thread. You need to really know the history. Does anyone know about the Sambo character? Is anyone old enough to see the old Al Jolsen blackface movies on Channel 9 and WPIX???? As most of you are WAY younger than me, I'll guess not.

Ever wonder why Bill Cosby owns and will not release the rights to The Little Rascals???? Because they show African Americans in a subservient aka Sambo role in respect to whites.

It's like seeing a confederate flag. If you know the history it will make you CRINGE. If you don't, it's just a symbol of southern rockChat Icon .
