Julianne Hough costume controversy
I think people are wayyyyyyy to sensitive. You can't take a shit without being critisized for doing something wrong, or offending someone. It's ridiculous.

This. I think it's being looked way too far into. O dont think there's anything wrong with it just like if a black person dressed up as a white person that wouldnt bother me in the least bit either. It's Halloween, we all dress as somthing we're not.

Blackface is certainly offensive. The practice has historical roots that are exploitative and insulting. Watch the movie Bamboozled...it really shows the problems with blackface. There are actually equity rules about white actors performing in blackface.
I find this really offensive.
why is it ok when it is the other way around?
Is the movie white chicks offensive?

Because its always ok for black people to ridicule and mock white people. This world sickens me...
I agree with the above poster people take things too far. You cant sh*t without offending someone. Its ridiculius already with this pc bs. Shes not maliciously mocking anyone. This isnt back in the day and the people that are so 'offended' dont even know why they are offended becsuse they are too young to know the history...
The state of this world is sickening.
Someone mentioned trayvon and george costumes. Thats def in poor taste. But what about the woman whose 13 month olf daughter was shot in thr head in front of her by 2 african american teens because they tried to rob her snd she had no money on her. She begged them not to kill her daughtet. They looked her in her face took her hands off her daughter that she was trying to protect and shot an innocent baby in the head. Where was the front page news story? Where were the proests? Where was the uproar in injustice for that mother? Where was a spokesperson for her? There was nooutrage? No al sharpton saying a word about that??? The double standard in this world is whats appauling! People should be focusing on real.issues not this bs

I have to agree- racism knows no color. It's rampant and it's EVERY SINGLE RACE. Every race is a culprit and every race is a target. And it's sick and it's sad.
Personally, I would never wear this costume, but that's because I really don't feel like getting harassed over a costume. While I don't think it should really offend anyone, I, being a person of reasonable intelligence, know that it would. So, unless she was trying to stir a little sh!t, the costume wasn't the brightest idea. Another poster said that when you're in the public eye like this, you're held to a higher standard (or should be!), and I absolutely agree with that statement.
Now, I know someone white who dressed up as Kanye West this year with his girlfriend dressed as Kim Kardashian. I personally thought that was hysterical, particularly the baby doll with the compass strapped to her chest.

I think you're missing the point. The point is whenever there is a black victim, it's automatically a racially motivated crime and there's usually an uproar to follow but no one says boo about a white victim. And I get that it didn't USED TO be this way. It USED TO be the exact opposite in fact. But the key words here are USED TO.

Just because she is not outright mocking African American people doesn't make it right. I have a problem with white people painting their face black period. Because it is a historically contested practice, and largely symbolic of a period of time when it wasn't just a silly Halloween costume, I think there needs to be some degree of sensitivity. There was a long time where people dressed in blackface to create caricatures of people of color, and that is a really painful memory for a lot of people. So just because she didn't mean it maliciously, it doesn't mean that its okay. It doesn't have to be a minstrel show for it to be wrong, IMO. There are tons of other costumes, and other characters from OTNB, I just think this was in poor taste.
I agree with everything, well said.
Also she isn't stupid she was likely looking for media attention, she is a media whore iMO I think her "relationship" with Ryan Seacrest highlights that well.
ITA. I have a hard time believing she didn't know this would be seen as offensive.

I don't consider this "blackface". When I think of blackface I think about anyone dressing up as a black person to mock or make fun of. I'm not saying she showed the best judgment, and its not something *I* would do.
I respect you are offended, as others are. However I don't see it exactly the same way.

Re: Julianne Hough costume controversy
I'm sorry I don't see this as offensive. She's dressed up as a character from a show (I don't know what it is, never seen it). It's not like she she is dressed up as a minstrel.
If she were dressed as an actor in a minstrel show, then THAT would be offensive, not this.
On a similar note, have you heard of the Zwarte Piet tradition in the Netherlands on December 5th? I was there one year and saw lots of black faces around (people paint their faces black for this tradition). I was wondering what the h*ll was going on. I had to ask a cashier why people were doing this. She looked at me like I had two heads and explained it was December 5th. Ok.... I find this tradition offensive because it is a mock of Africans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet

Julianne Hough costume controversy
So what should she have done to portray crazy eyes? She is white and the character is black. What about white actors who play Shakepeare's Othello and wear facial makeup to make their skin darker to match the character. Is that wrong? If you are dressing up as a character why not be authentic?

Re: Julianne Hough costume controversy
Robert Downey Jr. was in complete "blackface" playing a stereotypical African American male in the movie "Tropic Thunder". People thought it was hilarious. So hilarious in fact that he was nominated for an Oscar for that role. Nobody accused him of being an idiot, a racist, or offensive. People praised his performance and thought he was hysterical.
Now, JH dresses up for HALLOWEEN as a CHARACTER from a show and people are up in arms and losing their shit as if she's an ignorant racist. It makes NO sense to me. How is one different from the other?
Before anyone calls out something for being offensive I think it's important to take into account the CONTEXT in which the "offensive act" occurred and the person's INTENT behind it. You cannot just brush those two things aside as if it doesn't matter. It VERY much does and it changes the WHOLE dynamic of a person's actions.
In this case, IF she dressed up in blackface on some random day and strutted around town acting like an African American woman I would say, "Yep, offensive and wrong". BUT, to do it one night for a Halloween party in order to accurately depict a TV show character???...............yea, I have a VERY hard time finding anything offensive about that. It was in good fun and NOT meant to mock or hurt anyone or any race. You cannot ignore that fact.
For those that are so offended, I would hope you're also equally offended by ANY actor who ever depicts a character outside of their own race in a movie or show. Because after all, context evidently doesn't matter.............it's all offensive and racist. Right?
Do you also get offended when stand up comics rip on everything and everyone in their routines as well? Likely, no. Why? Because within the CONTEXT of their stand up routine, it's funny. It's hilarious. However, if that same comic was walking down the street saying half of what they do within their routine it would be deemed offensive and inappropriate. But in context, within a show on stage, it's funny.
Same thing in this situation. Within the context of Halloween and where the WHOLE point of Halloween is to dress up as something you're not..............I don't feel she was offensive in any way. It was a costume, meant to be in good fun, for ONE night, at a COSTUME party. To make more of it than that, to me, is a reach. There does not have to be any historical or social significance attached to it. Take it at face value, it was a Halloween costume. Nothing more.
