Just an observation regarding our newspapers.....
Im able to read most of the daily papers everyday which are the post, the daily news, and newsday. Although I appreciate each paper for its own characteristics, I've noticed Newsday shies away from more sensationalized stories such as the murder of Imette St Guillen, and focuses more on politics. In the last week, Newsday has only had this as their front page on monday and a follow commentary today. While the other two papers have been monitoring the story all week. I made a side comment to a fellow co-worker regarding this to which he replied, "Long Islanders only want to deal with what's going on in their backyard. Stories of murder and violence are nothing new to the 5 boroughs because we hear about it everyday and are more accustomed to it. Long Island wouldnt be able to handle that on a daily basis." I find some truth to what he says. What's your take on this?

Re: Just an observation regarding our newspapers.....
I don't know that we can't handle stories about murders, but more that this particular story is more city news. God knows when there's a juicy murder story like Ted Amman (sp?), or attempted murder like Fisher-Buttafuco it was in Newsday way more than the city papers.
ETA: The bigger problem with Newsday IMO is that they are usually a day late with stories, so it's old news by the time they are reporting on it. So annoying.

I usually only read the paper on-line and Newsday does have heading for World news, nation, LI & the city. I don't think I'm a regular. So I have not noticed this.

Well, I live in the city and I find the Daily News and Post to be pretty trashy papers. They are more interested in sensationalism instead of news (especially the Post).
I think there is a real battle between these two papers for readership. I don't think someone who usually reads the NYT will switch to reading the Post, but it is possible that an avid Daily News reader could swtich to the Post. So they have to sensationalize their covers.
If Newsday shys away from these kinds of stories and favors more political stories then I applaud them on their intergrity. However, I think its based mainly because (to my knowledge), Newsday doesn't have the same kind of competition that the Post and Daily News has- so in LI you may actually get some good reporting on important news.

I think this is probably part of it. newsday doens't have to sensationalize they are THE paper for LI. I read the times. I can't even deal with the Daily News and the Post. I hate their stupid sensationalized headlines and dumbed-down stories, and htey completely miss other really important stories in favor of complete BS...
Along those lines, it may be that newsday and NYT have more subscriber sales than newsstand sales and the daily ernws and post are the other way around, so you really are choosing between headlines, wheras if you have a subscription, no matter what the headline is, I'm reading the times
