do you ever find yourself wondering how you will be as a mom once you have a baby? I've never had a close friend or family member who had a baby, so I pretty much have NO experience with how to take care of one. I've never changed a diaper, and I've only held babies maybe a handful of times, but probably not even that much. AND when I do hold someone else's baby, it usually cries and I give it back to its mother. My mother passed away, so I don't even have her to help me when I do have my own child. Chat Icon So, even though DH and I really want our own children, I have to say I'm kind of nervous because I have no idea what to expect, and I just want to be a good mom and do everything right, KWIM? I'm just so happy that I have these wonderful boards to come to when I have questions! Chat Icon I've heard before that maternal instinct kicks in once a woman gives birth, and I"m REALLY hoping that's true!

I hope it comes naturally cause I dont really know anyone with babies and holding them when they are really little kinda freaks me out...they say its different when its your own so we shall see.

It's purely maternal instinct! I had zero experience before i had DS. I used to hold a baby and the baby would cry..and i find that my baby rarely cries when he's in my arms..they know their mama! You'll do great!Chat Icon

I feel the same way!!!! I've held my nieces and nephews but I then it starts to cry and I give it back it's mother..how am I gonna handle that when it's own?? Kinda freaks me out too! They say when it's yours it's a different story..that the child knows it's mother. That a baby can hear it's mother's voice in the womb(i'm not sure how true that is) I"m sure that is' going to come on as a natural instinct..But I just want to the best mama out there!!!!Chat Icon

I almost think that people in your shoes have it easier! I am great with kids, always have been. I'm so nervous that with my own kids I will be the worst and everyone will look at me and judge. Especially since this is my field. I get so freaked out sometimes because no matter how much knowlege I have about children I honestly don't know what it will be like with my own. Does that even make any sense?

Just my niece and friend's babies. But in all honesty, I never feel 100% okay with their Chat Icon b/c it's THEIR baby. I never want to hold their baby wrong, forget to "purelle"..etc....I cannot wait for MY Chat Icon so I don't feel the pressure Chat Icon I can't wait to make my own mistakes without feeling Chat Icon

Its so nice to see im not alone! While i will have my mother around and am banking on a lot of guidance from her, the ONLY other thing i will have is maternal instinct. I was 14 years old when my niece was born and she lived in florida the 1st year of her life so no learning experience there. Im not at all close with my other niece/nephew so SOL there lol and have been around friends babies verrryyy little. Im the youngest in my family and am in the same boat as far as having never changed a diaper. Its terrifying!
