Re: just curious...income related
The average HHI in the US is $55K. I would think that would be similar on LI, just because I think it is representative of the rest of the country-- the lower incomes balance out the higher ones.

according to the Long Island Index, the MEDIAN (not average) household income is $75K. (considering FH and I make more than that and cant buy a house it infuriates me!)

Family-- a household.
I know it seems REALLY low... but we are so jaded here. It's really cheap to live in other parts of the country.

the OP asked about LI though. eta: and i dont think we are jaded at all - we NEED to make more $$ here to afford it!!

I know they asked about LI-- but I just thought that it would most likely be similar to that of the US average.
And $55 seems so low because it is so much more expensive to live on LI- as opposed to other places in other parts of the country.
But really, LI is no different than any other community in the metro NY area.

Re: just curious...income related
and the LI index also states that the median home value is $395K - lets do the math! can someone making $75K afford a house that much putting 20% down. um no. and i did the calc with no other debt involved, $1K in insurance a year, and $6K in taxes a year.

Re: just curious...income related
that figure of $76K blows me away because I cant believe that anyone could afford a house on LI at $350-$500K on that income!!

the OP asked per person...but I have no idea, couldnt fathom a guess -so I searched and all i could find was household income so i posted it. - if the median household income is $75K - i would think the median per individual would be about $50K - but Im just guessing.

I think my question created a whirlwind effect. Me..... I was looking for individual and I got alot of household income answers. Which I divided to get my answer.

I dont think anyoneone keeps stats on that - its always household - i guess because many SAHM's, 20 year olds that dont work, etc would skew the figures???

It seems to me that many people on LI that I know have salaries that they can underreport.

Then the figures are probably skewed regardless bc it is undetermined if household means 1 person working and the other SAHM vs 2 working people...no? Then my avg income for 1 person can be 75k or it could be 35k

well thats why they do it household income - someone has to be making $$ to afford rent/mortgage/utilities, etc.
and it depends - are you saying the average income for people over 18? counting people who dont work?
im just saying i think that they do household income bc tracking individuals is too hard!
