Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

And why???

I have spoken to several people who are not donating to any type of Haiti relief fund.

Some of the arguments I heard are:
1) they are donating enough through our tax dollars which the government has given them 2) they think we will be financially responsible for Haiti for some time in the future
3) the funds for Katrina and the WTC were mismanaged (for example, Red Cross used donations to upgrade their phone system)
4) we are allowing the illegal Haitians that are already here to stay, plus allowing Haitians to bring their family member here.

i am not and will not for my own reasons. no one should feel obligated to do anything regardless of how many other people are doing it and shouldn't have to give an "argument" as to their decision.

we did donate. However, I respect the decisions of those that don't want to donate for whatever reasons they have.

Ditto. I wouldn't hold it against anyone for not donating, for whatever reason. No one HAS to donate. Not to mention, plenty of people really don't have a dollar to spare these days.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

I decided not to because, yes..funds for Katrina (pick a disaster) have been mismanaged.

Wyclef Jean is from Haiti and has a foundation. Its been in place for a while. He is under investigation for use of the funds for personal use. This charity is one that the telethon was funding (among 5 I think). How can I give money to the telethon knowing its going to an organization already under investigation for mismanagement??

I am sick over what happened. But I will wait and maybe give money when its needed in the future.

But when The lower 9th ward in New Orleans is STILL empty and 9/11 first responders dont have medical coverage and are dying and Tsunami victims are still homeless, I find it hard to donate to any cause feeling the money wont go to where its desperatly needed.

And it makes me sick about not helping in that sense.

Still no medical coverage & they deny them any saying that their cancer/breathing issues is not due from 9/11. People are paying tons of money a month for inhalers, and elsewhere, in other countries, they can get them for pennies.

Makes no sense.

We are the richest country supposedly, but with so many in desperate need here.

THANK YOU.

Couldn't agree more!!!!!!

We didn't donate. A bunch of reasons, including many that have already been mentioned on this thread. Just a choice for DH and I.

Same here! I only donated $5 thru the March of Dimes. Not much.
I could have done more, but, for personal reasons, didn't.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

I did donate, however, the person collecting was collecting for a co-worker who has family in Haiti and the money is going DIRECTLY to them, so I knew my money was not going to be misused. However, I completely understand other people's hesitation to donate to these bigger organizations.

I did donate through my Church, who has mission groups that travel through the area. Otherwise, I have not.

I can agree with what you have stated above.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

I want to donate and still might, but I know that only a very small portion of the money you donate to Haiti will actually go to Haiti and that bothers me.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

I did what I could - they asked me at the checkout if I wanted to donate and I said yes. I always try to give to whatever I can but if someone chooses not to that's fine - it is their decision.

The only thing that really gets me going is that, elsewhere in the world, people come down on America and make negative comments about our Country. I pride myself on being VERY patriotic - I love being an American and what America was founded on is what I'm all about. It upsets me when there is a disaster of some kind - we are the first to be "looked towards" to help, to aid, to give, to come over and do, etc. and everyone always says - well, they have nothing. It is a third world Country, we need to help - it is our duty, etc. And while I agree in some ways but, then, HOW DARE any country ever make negative comments about us or try to say we should do it "their way" with our way of life and how we choose to govern, etc. It is always the ones who knock America that are the first to reach out a hand when they get knocked on their arse by some sort of natural disaster, war, etc. And I'm not saying that Haiti did this - not by any means. I just can't stand when other places knock us and then when the "fit hits the shan" lol everyone just naturally turns to America. I guess we are OK when we are giving our money away to help others -- but then, in a few months when all this goes from the headlines, we'll be getting knocked again and told we should be more like freaking Denmark. I donated to helping animals in Haiti and other places where needed... DH and I had our own reasons for that but we are huge animal lovers so that was our way of helping...

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

We haven't yet, but possibly in the future.

I also would like to see the funds or items go directly to persons in need.

I am hesitant to think that a lot of the really big organizations actually do this.

However, at the same time, some of that money may be used to provide funding for people to go and help out in this crisis, so that's something too, right?

After 9/11, I've been the type of person who likes to give to charities or organizations that are getting less exposure and you know really, really need the $$$$ to make a difference, if that makes sense.

Same here. I kind of figured that the animals are usually forgotten in disasters like this, so I wanted my money to go there.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?

not money. the misuse is ridiculous.

i did, however, send 2 bag of clothes and a bag of diapers/formula sample cans/water bottles with a coworker. her family is in haiti and her brother was going down there to help dig out the remaining family members. the said they were managing OK, but her nephew is out of formula and there's nowhere to get more.

DH and I did not donate, for many of the reasons listed here and some of our own. I do not know if he donates to any charities (it's just not something we discuss) but I do, and they are all within the United States.

Americans helping americans?

Or the 3rd world helping americans?

Wasn't there a teleton for katrina?

I really don't think you can expect the poorest people in the world to help americans...the per capita income in hatai is $200 per YEAR...most americans make that in a day or 2

I agree

I keep seeing on Facebook statuses about how we need to help America first, I mean CMON...Their is NO comparision and I hate to think of how naive and possibly ignorant some people are to say that. It's harsh I know...I don't care if people don't donate, but those people are saying ridiculous things about America in need and it's so unfounded and uneducated. YES ...this gets me heated and I hope I didnt offend anyone..

There will always be need in America, in any country for that matter but the comparision just cannot be made.
