I didn't and I am not going to. I wish people would step up this much to help the people in this country.
This is bascially how I feel. We have not donated, yet. DH also feels its ridiculous the percentage of the money that goes toward "overhead". Work did send out an email naming charities to donate to, and one had a 0% admin fee, so if we do donate it will be there.

I keep seeing on Facebook statuses about how we need to help America first, I mean CMON...Their is NO comparision and I hate to think of how naive and possibly ignorant some people are to say that. It's harsh I know...I don't care if people don't donate, but those people are saying ridiculous things about America in need and it's so unfounded and uneducated. YES ...this gets me heated and I hope I didnt offend anyone..
There will always be need in America, in any country for that matter but the comparision just cannot be made.

Americans helping americans?
Or the 3rd world helping americans?
Wasn't there a teleton for katrina?
I really don't think you can expect the poorest people in the world to help americans...the per capita income in hatai is $200 per YEAR...most americans make that in a day or 2
I agree

I agree- and yet people fight things like health care for all, welfare, medicaid, other social programs, etc. which I know are far from perfect and have their issues- but isn't the goal to help Americans who need it?
And I can also understand frustration with overhead costs, etc, but organizations like Doctors Without Borders spend most of its money on programs and services. It's impossible for these organizations to not have some overhead. It's kind of sad to me that people aren't making donations because of past mismanagement- it's not hard to find out which organizations have minimal overhead costs. If I made a $100 donation and $87 went to actually helping people, then it's still $87 more than they had before.

amen! I don't know who you are or where you have come from, but I would love to pick your brain one afternoon.
exactly what I was thinking. Help America??? how?? with people unwilling to insure our own neighbors and friends.
I can bet, the people who aren't donating to Haiti are the ones not standing behind healthcare reform either.

i'm not donating to haiti but fully support healthcare reform. i'm not sure how you're connecting the two and saying if you believe in one you probably believe in the other. there's not much of a comparison

my bad, should have said that most people who aren't donating do not stand behind healthcare reform.
eta: i don't mean the ones with overhead issues, but the ones who are all about helping Americans first.

it's not naive or ignorant, it's how people FEEL. just because a cause is popular right now (and for valid reasons) doesn't mean everyone will donate to it or stand behind it.
i donate to americans first and foremost. i just sent a VERY generous donation to an extremely worthy american cause exactly a month ago at christmas time.
there are kids where i work who don't have a place to call home. they don't have food on their tables. they are suffering. as a school, we donate money and resources to these children when the need arises. no one feels pressure, no one is made to feel badly if they don't. no one even talks to each other about whether they gave something or not.
the nice thing about this country is we can decide who and what we donate to, or not donate at all. there should be no pressure and should not be a holier-than-thou feeling because *I* donate and *you* don't. we all do what we're comfortable with.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?
I think everyone has a right to donate or not donate as they please. For me and my DH, there's no way we could see the images and news of what is occuring in Haiti right now and NOT donate. Like DH said, so we won't go out to dinner once and that will make up for our donation. We liked that Hope For Haiti Now stated that 100% of the proceeds will go to the organizations - and while some may go to some overhead fees, I feel that the majority of the money will hopefully go to actual efforts (and if not for overhead, then these organizations would not really exist probably).

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?
I will preface this by saying, I did donate (very generously) to Haiti relief, and my company matched my donation.
That said, it's really no one's business if someone chooses to donate or not, nor is it anyone's business why.

ITA I can't believe that people are even questioning ,why and why not.... I told someone I know that DH and I donated whatever we could to Haiti and she said to me (in a very angry and annoyed tone of voice) "why don't you donate to your own country (Georgia), rather than donate to Haiti, I'm sure they can use that money more than Haiti....."

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?
Honestly to debate this is silly.
I donated bc I felt it was right.
I donated to Katrina and the Tsunami as well.
Are funds mismanaged? Maybe, but for me I want to donate so I do.
If people don't want to --whatever their reasons--that is their choice--that is why donating is optional

With all due respect, I find your implication quite offensive. I actually DID donate quite generously to the Haitian Relief efforts but am against the current healthcare reform as it is written. Not because I am heartless, or do not want to help americans that have no healthcare. I believe that reform is needed but I just do not agree with what is currently being proposed.
Everyone has there own reasons for donating or not and for supporting healthcare or not and I do not think the two are mutually exclusive or that opposing either makes you misanthropic.
ETA: Not that it matters for purposes of this question but I also donate to vaious charities within the U.S. and other relief efforts including Katrina. I can't believe people are questioning such a highly personal decision.

Read what I wrote again..I am not saying NOT donating is naive and ignorant, but comparing Americas homeless, in need ,etc to whats happened in Haiti is point blank ridiculous. The two can not be compared.
Americans will NEVER ever ( and thank God for it) have the poverty that Haiti faced BEFORE a major life shattering diaster hit them.
Americans have options, programs, choices and where they dont, they have the ability to FIGHT for them. Is it perfect? Of course not, this argument could get really deep on so many levels.
Like I said, I dont think there is anything wrong with not donating, not a thing..
What I'm finding appalling is those who haven't donated and are saying that they feel no american should before donating to America first.
One Facebook person honestly said " America is the only country with homeless people" ( Apparently didn't get the memo about the now 1 million ( ONE MILLION!) homeless people in Haiti or the half million in Thailand.
I think (feel) people complaining about Americas needs is ludacris compared to what the word faces. And those people need to take a better look at the world we live in.
Soap box or not, I try to be respectful of everyones feelings and ideas, but my feelings on it are strong as well I guess.

But I think she has some valid points...In regards to answering my post. Which was about people saying "America first" ...yet she is right, those same people ( in my experience) are those who fight Welfare increases and health reform ( generally) and drug programs .
There IS a naivity there ( and Yes I'm generalizing) ...
But its a different thread topic for sure.

We didn't donate. A bunch of reasons, including many that have already been mentioned on this thread. Just a choice for DH and I.
Same here.
If I was able to donate anything, it would be supplies. I feel money would be misused with the level of corruption there. But this is JMO.

I'm not, nor will I. #1 1st & foremost - I am unemployed & the few dollars I get from unemployment go to pay my own bills. #2, I dont trust anyone else w/ my money but me - I would much rather donate clothing, bottled water - or some other tangible item that I know will actually go to those who need it.

Re: Just curious...is anyone NOT donating to a Haiti relief fund?
I actually don't mind saying why... I generally only donate to LOCAL (long island based) charities. That is just my preference. I donate a lot & I donate every single week, but again I prefer to only donate to local charities - most larger charities have hidden agendas or ties to corporations that I just don't support.
That being said for Haiti like I have done for every other disaster, I donated to “Doctors Without Borders” emergency relief fund which is actually NOT specifically for Haiti but for their emergency response program with allows for immediate response in disaster situations, so when a natural disaster hits somewhere they already have some funds & supplies to help.
