Just found out I have mild scoliosis
I went to physical therapy, for the first time in my life, for a pinched nerve and the PT told me that I have mild scoliosis. I'm pretty upset, but I'm not entirely sure what this means ... I know it means I have a curved spine, but I guess overall - how bad is this? How will it affect my life? I was never diagnosed with it as a child, and I remember being checked in gym. I always though of it as a big deal ...

not a big deal at all IMO - I have had it since I was 12
never was an issue for me
there is nothing they can do about it

Thanks, it makes me feel better to hear that (not that you have it, but that it's not a big deal). I called one of my friends for comfort and her reaction was more "oh my god, I'm so sorry," which only freaked me out more.

Me too. When I was young there was talk of making me wear a brace, but nothing ever came of it. I have worse posture than I guess some others, but they can't do anything.

Ugh! There was brace talk around me too! But my mom found out that it didn't help as much as they thought, thank goodness!
I get a lot of pinched nerves - it's semi related. The scoliosis forces one side to be stronger and one to be weaker, so the weaker side can go into atrophy and that's where the pinched nerves come (when your muscles don't hold up your bones) - that's how a PT explained it to me.
I have never been held back by it (except the posture thing), except getting my spinal for my second child. That's all I will say.

Re: Just found out I have mild scoliosis
I was diagnosed when I was 12, too. From what I understand, unless the degree of curvature is 20 degrees or more, they really don't do anything. Since I was still growing, I had to have it monitored to see if it got worse, but it never did.
Since (I assume) you stopped growing a while ago, whatever degree of curvature you have will probably remain the same.
Sorry you were upset by it, but honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Re: Just found out I have mild scoliosis
It is definitely a big deal in some cases, but it sounds like not in yours. I was diagnosed as a child and had to wear a brace 23 hours a day. I could only take it off to shower. Being in 3rd grade at the time I was devastated and embarassed so I stopped wearing it. Well, at the age of 17, my senior year of high school, I had to have surgery because my curve was 38 degrees. I had a hunch on my back and my spine was pushing my organs out of place. The surgeon said my spine could push my organs so much that it would kill me. So I had to undergo 11 1/2 hour surgery to have a spinal fusion from the very top of my spine to almost the very bottom. My surgeon is the same doctor that operated on Gloria Estefan when they said she wouldn't walk after her car accident. He also worked with Christopher Reeves. Because I waited till I was older to have the surgery, my recovery was torture. Just to give you an idea, my sister was 13 and very thin when she had the surgery. Her recovery was 2-3 weeks. I was 17 and much heavier than her, and my recovery was 4-6 months.
Now, 5 years later, the rest of my spine that is not fused is deteriorated, fractured and curved. I found this out when I couldn't walk for nearly 2 months. I'm supposed to have the rest of it fused, but I am pushing it off because I am scared out of my mind to go through the surgery again.
If the doctor says your case is mild, then you probably don't have much to worry about. You're an adult so you're not really going to grow. But make sure you keep an eye on it. And I urge everyone with kids to make sure your kids are constantly checked and if it is found your child has scoliosis, have a great doctor monitor it. Please DO NOT disregard it as not serious. If anyone has ANY questions, feel free to FM me.

Re: Just found out I have mild scoliosis
Thank you everyone for the kinds words and support. I guess I was just in shock - I'm almost 30, so I would have expected to hear this 15 years ago. I guess it's better to know now than never so I can at least have it monitored and take precaution for certain things ... like childbirth. The PT basically told me I may have a painful pregnancy because of it ... way to comfort me!!!

Yeah, don't believe everything you hear. I had a doctor tell me I wouldn't be able to get pregnant because of it. My surgeons laughed at this. There are more complications with more serious cases. For example, I probably will not be able to give birth naturally. I also can not have an epidural. But with a mild case, depending on your curve and where it is, you might have nothing to worry about. If it's not causing you any pain now, it might not when you're pregnant. I would go see an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in spinal surgery to get an honest answer to any questions you have, as well as where the curve is and what degree it is. The majority of the population has some mild form of curvature so don't make yourself crazy over it. I can recommend my doc in the city and a great doc out here that trained with him if you want to see someone reliable.

Re: Just found out I have mild scoliosis
My best friend wore a brace throughout elementary, junior high and one year of high school. Then she had surgery and knock wood she has been fine since 1992.
I agree that it depends on the degree of the curve.

same here...only when i got my epidural during labor was it an issue as i only had the medicine work on one side of my body (luckily the anesthesiologist noticed my scoliosis right away and warned me it would prob happen), they just had to come in and adjust it
