i agree... personally i wouldnt want my unvaccinated newborn sitting in the same waiting room with an unvaccinated toddler... especially for something so life threatening as the mmr...
Do you bring your kids to the mall? To restaurants or the park? They are susceptible to the MMR there as well, not just the waiting room of a dr's office. It's measles, not the plague.
I have a newborn at home so I decided it is time to vaccinate my older son. But my ped. still doesnt give the MMR until 18 months, so whether it be 12 months or 18 months your child is still vulnerable to getting it or giving it before that time.
Yes but the Dr CAN control his environment and at least there provide his patients a safe environment, he is doing what he can to control and/or limit the exposure to his patients in the only way he can.

I see your point. It is the dr's practice and he has the right to decide what is best for his office.

For him to force you to leave the practice because you dont want to give your son the MMR is ridiculous in my opinion an infuriates me As a parent, YOU make the decisions for your child.
I do not think it is ridiculous. while yes, I do think that you as the parent should decide how and when to vaccinate, doctors are allowed to release patients who do not vaccinate "for the greater good", it protects the children too sick or too young to be vaccinated, and I think that is beneficial for me and my children. It is really a matter of finding the right doctor for you and your child
as per the letter in every room at my doctor's office, not vaccinating your child on schedule may affect the "parent, patient, doctor relationship",....that is their way of saying, vaccinate on time or find another doctor
I dont think its ridiculous either. I think for both you and the Dr, if you have different opinions on how to treat your child, and you cant see eye to eye on them, that its best to part ways and find a Dr who is more in line with your own ideals.
ITA. It's really important that you are in collaboration with your Health Care Provider.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
12 months is the recommended first dose. I personally waited until 3 for my daughter and will do the same with my son. I delayed all vaccines though so I didn't just delay this one. I am very much in favor of most vaccinations but I do not agree with how concentrated the CDC schedule is. I understand their reasoning for it but I don't follow it.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
My ped. allows me to alter the schedule, and DS will not be getting the MMR until he is 2-2 1/2, and chicken pox maybe at 3..she is flexible.
I switched peds 3 times before I found one I was comfortable with and that followed my desired vaccine schedule. If you really want to delay shots, and he won't let you, it might be time to find a new ped.

same here
same here and for this reason gave mmr at 12 months. DS should have had chicken pox at the 15 month appt but was sick so he will get it next month at 18 months.
mmr was one shot for now.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
This is very common with a lot of Peds nowadays. You should ask around to see who friends and family use. Then call the offices and ask their policy on vaccines.
They do have the right to discharge a patient.
I gave DD all of her shots on time, but for DS, I am freaked. I have read many books and articles on both sides of the fence, and something is telling me not to do the MMR right know. He is 15 months. Our old Ped gave it at 12 mos, the new one we are using gives it at 12-18 mos. I want to try to hold out until at least 2.
Where do you live, maybe we can suggest a practice to meet your needs?

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
My Dr's office (Grello) gives it at 15 months per the chart they have from the AAP. They will let you extend it a little bit but he did say he has kicked people out of the practice for not wanting to give it within what they felt was a reasonable timeframe.

DS just got the MMR at his 12 month appointment. I don't know if it varies by state or by doctors, but this is the schedule my practice follows. The chicken pox vaccine is given at 15 months.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
My doctors office gives The MMR around 15-18 months months but we delayed it till he was 2. my doctors werent happy, but its not their decision and since they knew I was going to eventually give it to him, they did back off. I was even going to wait till he was 3 but we went on vacation out of the country this summer and we didnt want him to not have it. The only vaccine DS has not had so far is chicken pox shot. It's a personal decision so do what YOU feel is right as your DC mom If your doctor is not willing to delay it thats his choice, but its your choice to find a doctor who will work with you

I understand what you are saying about sitting in the waiting room, but the simple truth is that while the child you are sitting next to may in fact have been vaccinated, his/her parent may not have immunity and may be carrying ANYTHING that could infect your unvaccinated newborn.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
they dont give it separately anymore! I decided to break up the shots and gave the "M" of the MMR and then by the time it was time for the other "M" & "R" they stopped doing it...so I want to give the MMR shot but I want to space it out a little longer bec she now has to have a double dose of the first "M" which kinda sucks!

like someone else stated, there is no way to control that. What the peds CAN control is their patients and I feel more secure (right or wrong) going to a ped that follows the CDC schedule
this schedule is based on YEARS of research by highly skilled doctors, I'm going with them

See, now the thing is, the chicken pox vaccine isn't based on what I would consider YEARS of research by highly skilled doctors. It's been around for a mere 10-15 years, and is only 75% effective.
With regard to your point about feeling more secure going to a ped that follows the CDC schedule . . . unless you are a parent that has asked the ped to deviate from the schedule, how do you know whether or not they follow it????

I did the same and feel comfortable with my decision. I dont feel I put my child or anyone else's child at anymore of a risk because of it. There are adults that that can expose your children to measles or a variety of other diseases because their immunity has warn off and they have not been revaccinated.

ALOT of these vaccines are not based on years of research! Most of them have been taken off the market after years of people complaining of side effects and then they come up with a new formula and hope it works with no new side effects...the rotovirus vaccine is just one example. The measles vaccine we got and the vaccine kids got today is not the same. The swine flu vaccine they developed in the late 1970's caused a load of problems which is why they had to develop a new one for this new outbreak of swine flu.
It is a fallacy that these vaccines are tested for years before being put on the market. Our kids are their guinea pigs.

I mentioned earlier that there are signs in every room stating the fact that the practice follows the CDC schedule, I am sure they make excpetions for if a child is sick, etc....I guess I will never know for sure since I am not in every exam room for every appointment

Our Ped makes you fill out a family history that asks specifically if you have had the vaccines. He is very strict with his practice and if you haven't been vaccinated for specific things he will not accept the patient into his practice.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
I am sorry that happened.
Stick to your guns and your gut.
Did you ask your dr if he checked dr for markers? They are sooooo quick to give this one size fits all shot. 12 mos is young.
I had a ped walk out on me at 9 mo appt when we were discussing MMR. I told him I was going to be the one in my baby's life to deal with outcome of these decisions so I deserve a voice.
seriously, for a country so concerned about vaccinating and the dangers of delaying...there are tons of adults out there who cannot afford their copays or don't have insurance.
