OK. WOW.
i've already spoken my thoughts about this topic, and i thank those of you who considered and supported my viewpoint.
but i have one more comment that i can't let go.
i am so utterly disgusted and disappointed at many of the sentiments expressed by the women on this thread about medical doctors.
ijust to name a few, i've read that doctors:
-don't get the education they need to do their job -follow what the CDC says without much thought or consideration -prescribe drugs based on the latest pharm rep to visit the office
you have GOT to be KIDDING me.
maybe, just for a second, you might consider the possibility that your doctors actually CARE about the well-being of you and your children.
maybe we sacrifice YEARS of our lives, COUNTLESS sleepless nights, so that YOU can rest easy knowing that your child/mother/father/whomever is getting good care.
MAYBE - just MAYBE - we practice with integrity.
and maybe we're actually human beings and parents ourselves?? imagine that.
i find it unbelievably hypocritical that any one of you would go RUNNING to your pediatrician if your child was critically ill. and, of course, he or she would BE THERE.
but then you feel it's okay to come on a board like this and criticize and bash with little to no respect.
disgustiing.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
just want to add and I only can speak for myself, obviously. I trust my doctor, if I didn't, he would not be my doctor. I do not have "blind faith" nor am I a "lemming". I do my research COUPLED with my doctors advice and I make a decision from there.....

ITA! Although I have a research background and am well versed in interpreting statistical data, I still trust my doctor more when it comes to medical literature because that is his specialty and training. I would take his advice over bulletin boards and the internet any day.

very very well said!! i feel for you because you're absolutely right.
i find that this only happens online. i would NEVER listen to what someone on a message board says is fact. i see this over and over--one person posts something and everyone else thinks it's a great idea and blindly follows. my "real life" friends don't have any idea what i'm talking about when i tell them things i read on here.
my doctors do not prescribe medicine based on what rep comes in. they have been in practice for about 50 years and have more integrity than that. whenever i ask my ped about vaccines he can rattle off a slew of information to me. i know he knows his stuff--i certainly don't as i'm not a doctor and will NOT use google as medical fact.
i too am tired of the pediatrician "bashing" on here. they are not out to harm our children. they are there because they took an oath to protect and help our children.

3. One more comment on best practice . . . once upon a time, all but one man believed the world was flat, and everyone who believed that thought Christopher Columbus was crazy. He set sail anyway and proved the skeptics wrong because he had the courage to challenge the populace. Parents who are brave enough to ask questions should be encouraged, not scoffed at or made to feel guilty or that they are not doing right by their child.
Just to add to this. Google Ignaz Semmelweis. He was ridiculed and shunned by the medical community, and years later he was proven right.
I'm sure many doctors are worried about disagreeing with vaccines because of the repercussions from the medical community.

As I am the poster who made reference to MDs and pharm reps, I shall comment. I PERSONALLY have changed primary care physicians 6 times (about to be 7) in the last 5 years because of this. The primary care MD I am currently looking to replace MISDIAGNOSED my mother's lung cancer as pneumonia, which left her untreated for a year. He is also not up to date on the current TSH standards and would not increase my synthroid despite my subjective reports and complaints that my symptoms had not in any way shape or form been alleviated. As a result I was forced to take matters into my own hands and find an endo, make an appointment, and fight with his office to get a referral (which of course didn't get done timely or properly) who did in fact up my synthroid, not once but twice b/c the TSH standards did change FIVE YEARS AGO. So excuuuse me if I don't have very complimentary things to say or <gasp> my opinion is based on my personal experience.
I consider myself LUCKY to have found a ped I can trust, but my experience tells me to ASK QUESTIONS and not accept everything that is said to me as gospel. IF my ped told me it was her way or the highway, I would hit the road. I want a doctor who is going to listen to my concerns and give me information that she has that I don't to assist me in making decisions for my child AND I am grateful that I have her. The OP is entitled to the same, and is entitled to be upset that her ped gave her a my way or the highway choice

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
why cant everyone just do what is good for them and their child? If you want to go ahead and give vaccinations no questions asked, then do it, if you want to research and ask questions, then do. It's what works for you and your family. I will say from my experience that their are plenty of times doctors have been wrong and personally I do research and ask questions (and yes listen to my doctors too), regarding care for myself and my family. I think all three point are important.
My DS has an egg allergy, his allergist told us NO flu vaccine b/c of it, well I went to a check up last year and saw one of my peds in the practice (their are 3) who is PRO vaccination and following the CDC's schedule and he was pushing me to get it! Telling me oh your DS will be fine, blah blah blag, excuse me? My DS's allergist, who tested him and is treating him told me NO flu shot and your pushing it on me? WHY??? I went home called my allergist and he said I am glad you didnt give it to him, he could have had a bad reaction. A couple months later I went for another visit and a different ped asked me about getting the flu vaccine, once again I said he has an egg allergy, NO flu vaccine and he absolutely agreed! He said with egg allergy's you have to be very careful with that and even the MMR sometimes. So now you have 2 doctors in the same practice who work together for years (both are in their 60's) one was informed and the other apparently couldn't care less that my DS could have had a reaction b/c he was only about vaccinating him. So yes based on my experience I asked questions, do research and listen to my doctor (in this case DS's allergist) especially regarding vaccinations. We are the main ones looking out for our DC, I dont care how much you trust your ped, we still have their best interests at heart.

Re: Just left PED and soooo UPSET!
Some final words:
DancingBarefoot (from page 4) and blind confidence: Yes I'm in the medical field. I'm a pediatric intensivist who works in a PICU. I guess my faith isn't totally blind since I learned about all the classic vaccines in med school/residency. For the newer vaccines like the new rota or H1N11 I can just call one of my infectious disease buddies and get their take on it.
I think alexlynn's post on page 4 says it well: Those of us in the field have sacrificed a lot to do what we do. I've had 4 years of med school followed by 3 years of residency AND 3 years of subspeciality fellowship training. Even as an attending I often go in early, stay late and need to run in and out at odd hours. I love what I do and couldn't see myself doing much else with my life.
DB's post on page 5: You've changed doctors 6 times in 7 years? Wow. I suspect no doctor would be good enough for you.
Bayla and the egg allergy: Even those of us who are militantly provaccine recognize the contraindications. Egg allergy is a contraindication to the flu shot. Period.
Now I wonder if the discrepancy and difference of opinion had to do with the diagnosis of egg allergy? If your kid ate eggs and anaphylaxed then there's no question that's an allergy and you should avoid the flu shot. Now if you had RAST testing done and were in one of the lower classes the meaning of the test is less clear esp if you've never been challenged with eggs.
Either way, I think you're right to do your homework and talk with your allergist before getting the shot.

For the newer vaccines like the new rota or H1N11 I can just call one of my infectious disease buddies and get their take on it. So then you don't truly vaccinate "no questions asked" - and that was all I was trying to get across to the OP. She should not be made to feel guilty for taking the time to ask questions and wanting to have a frank discussion. You're fortunate to have coworkers and other professionals to discuss this with.

Personally, yes, but my ped is FABULOUS, and I drive 45 minutes to see her b/c IMHO she is worth every minute of the drive. If I could find a primary care MD who wasn't ONLY prescribing using in office samples of "the latest and greatest" or who was up to date (see my TSH reference) I would be overjoyed!
