We do NOT do well with ice here.

Then again we have tons of bridges and ice forms so quickly. We have smooth curved roads not meant for ice. We have no salt of any kind at all here. We use gravel and sand as a last resort.

Yes we 'only have' over 1M people living here in the space that is much, much larger than NY Metro. True, but we don't have mass transit and everyone drives to and from. We have EXTREMELY high elevated roads as well..

No mass need for food storage .. just hate idiots on the road. Oh and we are NOT a handsfree state! Its illegal to text and drive in school zones. GRRR

Update 5:50am 1/24
Schools are closed. ALL over town. Most businesses are shut. It is advised to just stay home and stay off the roads. However... by mid afternoon it should be cleared up, cold but drive-able.

I used to drive from Lubbock to Plainview a lot.
Hated that drive.
Straight, flat runs.
Then getting off the exit I had to remember that the service road was TWO way, and had to get into the right lane fast.

You're not equipped to deal with this weather. It's an anomaly there, not the norm like here.

I would expect that it would impact you more because of that

Friends were joking on FB "Bet you miss NY now, right Veronica?" with the snow. I said Nope, don't miss it now but I will when we get ice. I always said I loved NY winters and TX summers. Stand by that today.

oh and I take that right side high ramp to go to my aunts house.. AJ says we're going into OUTTER SPACE. It feels like you're about to drive off! Then it curves left and merges with the highway BELOW the road you see as 'ground' level in this photo. So a deep steep drop to highway level.

That intersection / interchange is not complete. There's another 'stack' still due. We have at least 4 of these 'high rise passovers' at the major intersections with a few more planned.

I don't know whats up with our weather. We had 72 just a day or so ago! right now it looks gray and overcast all over our horizon. Until about 10am they were calling for snow. LOL (sorry the idea of 'snow' here is a tad bit funny) However.. just 30yrs ago we got 13 inches of Snow in Feb. No one is ready for that again (minus that one very pretentious town we have that owns 4 snow plows and a 'limited' amount of salt for their residents only). 3 years ago we got a frosting and it shut us down. I posted it on here actually.

I will say this....

I work in a building with high priced lawyers... rode the elevator with one and somehow the topic of auto-start came up he was shocked to know I had not only one in the car with me but both my vehicles. Said he needed to get one for his wife's Cadillac. LOL Its GOOOD to have auto start!!!!!

New Orleans' Highways are JUST like this too. I'm sure we are up Shits creek without a paddle if we get any sort of freezing precipitation.

I guess since ice is not the norm their you don't have those " bridge freezes before road" signs either.

Snow and sleet are expected in the San Antonio area, and the commute could be challenging. XXX ISD is monitoring the conditions carefully and is in contact with area police departments and the Texas Department of Transportation. In addition, district leaders, including the Superintendent, will begin driving roadways at 3:30 a.m. in order to make a determination on a possible district closure.
“The safety of our more than 68,000 students is a top priority,” said Dr. XX XXX, Superintendent of Schools. “With XXXISD being so large, weather conditions on one side of the district may not be as severe as another side, but the decision to close affects all schools in the district.”
A decision on whether to close the district will be made at or around 4 a.m. and then a “phone-tree” system will be used in which district employees, beginning with the administration, form a chain of calls to pass information to each other.
If the Superintendent decides it is in the best interest of the district to close, information will immediately be disseminated to parents and the community. The district will post information on its web site (sic) and Facebook and Twitter pages. Local media will also be contacted, and a Parentlink message will be sent out district wide to all parents and employees.
“I strongly urge parents to watch local news, listen to radio reports and view the XXXISD web site, as well as district social media to get up-to-date information,” stated XX.
In the event of school closures, XXISD has two restricted makeup days. These severe weather makeup days are Feb. 17 and June 6.
The last time XXX ISD closed its doors due to inclimate weather was in February 2011 due to icy road conditions.

I lived in Arlington for a year and it snowed and you are right, they are not prepared and people have no clue how to drive in it.

Even if things were open, i would stay home anyway..not worth it, especially for your area.
