Just rented a steamer vac and I have to say. . .
I'm now completely addicted to it.
We've used a dyson on our living room rug 3-4 times a week since DD was born but OH MY GOD the steam vac got so much gross guck and dirt out of it - it was horrible and wonderful to see.
I have to return it in a few hours and I'm literally steam cleaning every rug, piece of furniture, drape - in sight.
I so want to buy one now.

I have one that I bought years ago. I use it every few months, sometimes more. No matter how much you vacuum, the steam vac will always get up tons more dirt.....
The more you use it, the more you'll want to use it.... They have them at target for around $150. It pays for itself after only a few uses.

I have a portable one that I don't like, but I have this full-size one that I love...

I rented one from a Rite Aid pharmacy - Rug Doctor brand steam vac. It was around $25 for a 24 hour rental. I sooooooo want to buy one now.

See I was just about to call Stanley Steemer. Do they do as good of a job as the companies do?

If they don't do quite as good, you can still do it as often as you want, so in the end, the home units will work much better. You could use it every weekend if you wanted. I can't imagine calling SS every weekend....
Every time I use ours, it pulls up so much stuff, that it's hard to imagine getting that much more with the pros. I'm sure they get up a bit more, but it's all relative.

I have the same one. I usually do a carpet every weekend. I rotate between the living room/dining room, den and upstairs. With 3 dogs, it helps immensely in keeping things somewhat clean.
Like you added, it's great to use it as many times as you like - without having to call someone in to do it. Stanley Steemer sometimes just comes in and runs over the carpets....not putting the time in on areas or stains that need it. This way, I control it!

I rented a carpet shampooer from Home Depot and I was actually a little grossed out by what came out of the machine at the end
