Police say Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot was arrested on drunk driving charges early this morning.
here is the Newsday story:
Linda A. Kabot, the supervisor of Southhampton town, was arrested shortly after midnight today and charged with drunken driving, according to Westhampton Beach village police.
A police report said that Kabot was stopped on Main Street in Westhampton Beach at about 12:25 a.m.
Westhampton Beach Police Officer Ryan R. Lucas was on routine patrol when, according to the report, he spotted a 2006 gray Toyota fail to stay in a lane "by crossing over the double yellow prior to making the left hand turn onto Main Street."
Police said that Kabot's eyes "were red and glassy and her breath smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage."
Kabot, the report said, refused to submit to a breath test and was arrested. Kabot appeared this morning before Westhampton Beach village justice Robert A. Kelley Jr. and was released without bail. She shied away from photographers after leaving the courthouse.
A call to Kabot's home Monday morning was not answered.
Sally G. Pope, a Democratic member of the Southampton Town Board, expressed shock when she learned of the arrest this morning.
"Oh my gosh," Pope said. "It's a big surprise. I've never seen her drunk."
Asked how the arrest might affect Kabot's re-election chances, Pope said, "Well, it's not something people look on favorably. It's dangerous behavior and it can lead to inconsistencies."
In a political squabble in May, town Republicans dumped Kabot as head of the Southampton GOP ticket and instead named town Conservative chairman James Malone to run for the supervisor's seat. But in July, a deal was struck and Kabot was selected to run for re-election, with Malone on her slate.
The deal was struck after Kabot filed petitions to run in a Republican primary against Malone.
Before becoming town supervisor, Kabot was a member of the Southampton Town board for six years. Kabot, born and raised in Southampton Town, lives in Quogue with her husband, Lance, and their three school-age sons. Her Web site says she is a photographer, business manager and certified elementary schoolteacher
