Just wanted to share- Beginning of our Homeschooling Journey

I've been updating about this on the Parenting School Aged Children board but I know some of you might not go over there, so I wanted to cross post it here.

I know testing, opting out, common core, and all of that are very hot topics these days. I wanted to share my family's response to everything that's going on, and hope that maybe it will help someone else who might be dealing with similar problems.

I just read your post- it sounds like you really put together something amazing for your dd.

I am completely fascinated by the home school process and hope you will continue to post updates. I know I won't be able to do this for my children, but I am definitely interested in following your journey.

I also have an older son, in seventh grade. If you had told me at any point in the last 8 years he's been in the public school system that I would be considering homeschooling one of my children, I would have laughed in your face. It was never even on my radar. But Rebecca has definitely changed my way of thinking. For her, this was the logical choice. So don't necessarily rule it out Chat Icon

I Think it is great, I sometimes consider it, but I am not sure if I can do as well as a teacher. Heck, my kid is in first grade, and the math homework he comes home with, baffles me. I have to read questions a few times because they usually don't make sense. And I would be worried that when they get older, I can't teach them the curriculum, because I don't understand it.

I think it's wonderful! I don't think I could do it but I admire people who can. Best of luck!

The beautiful thing about homeschooling is that you don't HAVE to teach the curriculum that they do in school. For example, I will NOT be teaching Go Math (which is what my DD and I'm sure your DD have for first grade). That math is not taught the way my DD thinks... why would I do that to her? I won't have any more success than the teacher did. Right now I'm considering these math curriculums:

Math U See

Right Start Math

A Beka Math

They all teach what the kids need to know (addition, subtraction, place value, money, etc) but in different ways.

Very interesting. I may have to talk to dw about my 2 ds getting home taught. We are not a big fan of the garbage that goes on in school, like when my son comes home and says he watched a movie, because the teacher had to go somewhere, or when half the day is spent on parties, A schools main focus should be to teach , not play games and have parties. I am not saying some fun activity is notneeded, but it seems like 25-30% of his day is non-curriculum, which he could be doing more of. or We could take advantage of that extra time, and do more life type learning skills. Like how to do laundry, how to cook, how to budget a checkbook.
You really have me thinking now....

Homeschooling parents typically do "school" for about 3 hours a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. You don't have all the distractions of a typical classroom, don't have all the other nonsense that goes on, and you can move on when your child has mastered the skill or idea, rather than waiting for 20-30 other kids to get it.

There are as many curriculums and ways of teaching the material as there are kids, to the point that it's a little overwhelming! You just have to know what kind of learner your child is and go from there. If you think about it, what do we want our kids to know? How to read. How to write. How to do math. How to think critically. Geography and history. Science. And then you pick a curriculum that fits your child the best... And if it doesn't seem like a good fit, you pick another one!
