Keeping babies awake during the day

I know Connor is only 3 weeks old, but he sleeps most of the day. How can I get him to stay up a bit more so he sleeps better at night? He always falls asleep nursing. I think he still has his days and nights mixed up. Thanks!

When Sarah had this the ped. suggested keeping the lights on so the room is bright, keeping the tv or radio on kinda loud, talking and playing with her, keeping her undressed, changing her diaper a lot, and if all else fails get her undressed and put a cool washcloth on her chest. It upsets them, but keeps them awake.

we chose to just ride it out and by about 5 or 6 weeks she was fine.

They can't distinguish day from night until 6 weeks so I wouldn't try to convert him this early. Let him sleep when he needs to. Sleep begets sleep. Forcefully waking him or keeping awake during the day may only make day and night worse.

My thoughts exactly! They need the sleep!

All 4 of my sisters kids slept through the night for 12 hours from the day she brought them home. She would do whatever it took to keep them up during the day. Change there diaper or clothes for no reason and it worked.

Re: Keeping babies awake during the day

i think 3 weeks is too early to bother. but by 6 weeks, i tried to play with abby a lot during the day- playmat, carry her around the house & talk to her, sing to her, put her in the boppy & read her books. we also tried baby massage a few times. by 6 weeks they seem to be napping more during the day & really sleeping long stretches at night, rather than just going through sleep/awake cycles like a newborn. if that makes sense. i wouldn't expect a 3 week old to sleep very long stretches at night without waking for feedings yet. soon though- hang in there!

eta: remember, the better a baby naps, the better they sleep at night.

They grow when they are sleeping and if you tried to keep the baby awake they wouldn't be much fun...just cranky
