Re: Keeping DC warm in the car seat in winter
BUNDLE ME!!! loved it with my dd. at first i was using blankets.. which was fine for me when someone was sitting in the back with her.. but when it was time for me to take her out alone.. i didnt want to use blankets incase she would grab and put over her face. So started using bundle me b/c i would take her to my sis's to babysit and this way if she was sleeping my sis would just keep her in the car seat and not wake her. I plan on using on baby #2.

Re: Keeping DC warm in the car seat in winter
I read on a couple of websites (I basically googled Bundle Me and safety) that the Bundle Me wasn't safe to use in the car. Does/did that worry you at all?

I used the Bundle Me and loved it. I never heard about the Bundle Me not being safe. I did hear that bulky snow suits were not safe. I have to read more about the Bundle Me being unsafe. Another thing to worry about.

I was more concerned that most safety websites will say not to use heavy jackets and buntings on children under 6 months. The Bundle Me looks poofy but once it was in use, it crushed to just a thin layer. I felt comfortable with that and the restraints were close to her body.
If you are opposed to both, then dress DC in regular clothes and put a blanket over DC's lap. Cover her hands with socks if needed. Keep a warmer bunting in the car in case of breakdown. I wouldn't be too worried about DC being cold for just a car ride. NY winters are mild and it's worse when they sweat and then get cold.

We only used the bundle me for the stroller, I had also heard not to use them in the carseat. We did use something similar, that did not go underneath dd, therefore, it did not stretch the carseat straps. It is an elastic covering of the carseat. Here is a picture - it was great, no coats and she was born in December.

Re: Keeping DC warm in the car seat in winter
IMO a bundle me has less padding than a winter coat. As long as the straps aren't loose and the baby is snug I feel safe.

I used the bundle me, it was great...I can't imagine why it would be unsafe, it doesn't do anything to the straps at all

the padding on the back is why they are said to be unsafe, the carseat manufacturers do their crash tests with the babies back against the car seat with no padding/blankets behind it.

I'm in northern CT, which is a bit colder and gets more snow than LI/NYC. The winters could definitely be worse though.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid about the Bundle Me. It seemed like a great idea, but then I read about some safety concerns.

Understood although I was not concerned in the least while using one...

LOVED this!!! We used the bundle me once. This was such a great protector all around DD in the bad weather - it kept the wind off her face, out of her ears and kept her nice and roasty toasty warm.

Re: Keeping DC warm in the car seat in winter
I used a Bundle Me & loved it!!! I understand the concerns, but my thought was if I didn't use it he would be a in thick bunting, so he still wouldn't have his back right against the car seat.

Thank you both! Do you happen to know whether this is compatible with all car seats?

See now, THIS would concern me as I feel that HOW do you make sure the baby's face is completely free? It looks like it could easily ride up. Concerns with SIDS are the baby rebreathing there own air. The mirror only provides so much of a view- how do you know the baby isn't rebreathing his/her own breath?
And when you do further research, even the MIRRORS are considered *unsafe*. It goes on and on.....
We did use the Bundle Me, but I totally understand the concerns. I suppose the only "right" answer is to do what YOU are comfortable with.

That thing doesn't ride up. We used in when Nicholas was a baby 9 years ago. I just put a blanket on Emma while carrying her to the car, then took it off once in the car since it was VERY warm with the heat on in the there. I *thought* I read on here the issue with the bundle me is that it can catch on fire because it's not flame retardant thus burning the baby since it goes UNDER he/she.

Re: Keeping DC warm in the car seat in winter
I had a December baby. We used the Graco Snugride with a Bundle Me This is what Graco says about winter & babies and their carseats:
Question: How should I adjust the harness straps on my child's car seat to accommodate bulky winter clothing in cold weather? Answer: During cold weather, parents clothe their children in various winter clothing that includes snowsuits, jackets, coats, and buntings. Through its testing of children dressed in these types of winter apparel, Graco has determined that they may affect the adjustment of the harness by as much as 4 inches compared to a child dressed in summer clothing. With the wide variety of winter clothing available of varying thicknesses, Graco advises caregivers to follow these guidelines.
Clothing that interferes with the proper placement or adjustment of the harness system should never be used. An improperly adjusted harness greatly reduces the effectiveness of the child restraint and can contribute to ejection of the child resulting in serious injury or death. Graco recommends that the instruction manual be read and followed completely. Proper adjustment of the harness is critical for optimal use of the child restraint whether inside the vehicle, or when used as a carrier (for infant car seats). The harness system should always be snugly adjusted around the child. The thicker the coat, the more attention should be given to the proper snugness recognizing that the winter coat will require the harness to be adjusted more tightly than if the child were only wearing a shirt. It is important for the shoulder straps to be properly placed on the shoulders. Do not use clothing that will interfere with the proper placement of the straps on the shoulders; infants wearing snowsuits with hoods in rear-facing seats are of particular concern in this regard. Graco recommends that children in infant seats not be placed in bulky clothing and should be covered with a blanket on top of the car seat in order to minimize the amount of clothing under the harness. Always use the chest clip positioned at armpit level. The chest clip helps to keep the shoulder straps on the shoulders and close to the neck. Buntings or similar clothing without individual leg openings prevents the harness from being placed between the child’s legs and should never be used. Always remember to readjust the harness when warmer weather arrives and the winter clothing is no longer worn. A loose harness greatly reduces the effectiveness of the child restraint and can contribute to ejection of the child resulting in serious injury or death.

we used this too. i would put a small blanket over her legs underneath if it was really cold out, but it did keep her nice and warm all winter. trust me the heat from her body against the car seat padding will keep her back warm enough, that you don't need the extra fleece from the bundle me.
plus they say anything under the straps is a no no, so this was great, wrapped voer hte top of the car seat.
