Keeping lettuce nice
Does anyone have tips on keeping lettuce nice for a few days in the fridge? Seems like once I cut and wash it, it almost immediately starts wilting (even without dressing it in the serving bowl.)
I'm going to try patting it dry after I shoot it through the salad-spinner.
Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks.

I wouldn't cut it and wash it until you are going to use it.

I do that and it lasts me a long time without wilting

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
My only problem with that is the greener leaves are on the outside and as you get to the middle it's more white leaves. So usually I like to mix them all up. Do you not do this?
Do you just toss out the middle, then? It seems unappealing to eat the middle on its own with the greens.
(I'm talking about Green Leaf lettuce here---which may be more green throughout then say, Iceburg.)

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
I have washed, cut & dried lettuce then kept in the fridge wrapped in a paper towel in a ziploc or rubbermaid container and it kept for a few days..probaby 3.
In the past I have also stored it in my salad spinner (mine doesn't have holes on the bottom). I covered the top with saran wrap and left a papertowel in there to capture water and it was fine for several days.
I guess I am lazy and don't want to have to prepare the salad every single day - I like being able to grab a handful or two of lettuce and go.

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
the papertowel helps a lot. I have a turtle and we wash it's lettuce and keep it wrapped in papertowels and put in a ziplock.
Stays dry and crisp.

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
It helps if you don't cut it with a knife but instead break it apart with your hands...the metal makes it turn brown quicker.

I do the same for our tortoises and it lasts for about a week...they eat heartier greens though so I would think something like Romaine would only last a few days.
As for eating the middle...I cut lettuce into strips instead of peeling off the layers...there's always a nice mix of dark and pale lettuce. Pat dry and wrap in papertowels...stays for a few days.

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
Never cut lettuce with a metal knife, the parts that touch the knife will brown up. Always use a plastic lettuce knife (LNT or BBB have them).

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
storeing lettuce when dry is the key trick to making it last longer...
if you wash, dry by paper towel or let it sit for a bit. If water (or any form of liquid - salad dressing) it will turn

Re: Keeping lettuce nice
I just bought romaine hearts so that we can use just one at a time. But I have found that when I buy it dry, it lasts longer, but there are so many stores that shower the lettuce all the time and you bring it home soppingwet.
