Ketchup Spill Sets Off Lawyer-Secretary Feud

Ketchup Spill Sets Off Lawyer-Secretary Feud
Emails Over Dry-Cleaning Bill Become the Talk of London's Legal Circles
LONDON (June 17) - An email between a highly paid lawyer and a secretary over a tomato ketchup stain has become the talk of legal circles in London, leaving the sender distinctly red-faced.
British media reported with glee the tale of Richard Phillips who emailed the secretary to ask her to pay a four-pound ($7.30) dry-cleaning bill after she accidentally spilled tomato ketchup on his trousers.
The secretary, who had just returned to work after her mother died, was so irate she forwarded the email to several colleagues at the firm of Baker & McKenzie, who in turn passed it on to others.
The emails quickly appeared on the Internet and in the press.
"Dear Jenny," the lawyer wrote, "I went to the dry-cleaners at lunch and they said it would cost four pounds to remove the ketchup stains. If you could let me have the cash today that would be much appreciated."
Secretary Jenny Amner replied: "With reference to the email, I must apologize for not getting back to you straight away but due to my mother's sudden illness, death and funeral I have had more pressing issues than your four pounds.
"Obviously your financial need as a senior associate is greater than mine as a mere secretary."
Colleagues had offered to hold a collection to cover the bill but Amner paid it herself.
The law firm was not impressed.
"I can confirm we are aware of the incident," a spokeswoman said. "This is a private matter between two members of staff that clearly got out of hand. We are investigating."
Newspapers also printed several emails sent to Phillips in response. One investment banker said he was deeply saddened to hear about the ketchup stain tragedy while another suggested he emigrate.

WOW, no wonder this made the rounds!!
Baker McKenzie is a HUGE firm, I"m sure they hate that this leaked out
This just epitomizes the ludicrous things that insensitive bosses ask of their assistants (I am thanking my lucky stars I do not have a boss this inconsiderate!!)
What a JERK

Felicia, I agree with you. In 6 years that I have been working here and with the same boss, I think that he has asked me to get him lunch maybe 3 times because he was stuck on a call. I have a wonderful boss.

Lisa, so true .. we are fortunate. Especially in this atmosphere when you DO come across a lot of difficult attorneys in big NYC lawfirms (I've seen co-workers of mine in tears at things their bosses have done to them)
While I have done many personal things for my boss, such as planning vacations for him and such, he is totally appreciative. Not to mention HE is the type who will ask ME if I want coffee on his way to Starbucks.. (I have him trained well )
I've worked with my current boss for nearly 12 years now and sure he can drive me crazy sometimes but overall he is a gem of a guy. On those days when he's driving me crazy I try to remember that.. because I KNOW how much worse it can be out there!
Ugh , I still cannot believe that jerk asked his assistant for 4$ to cover his dry cleaning
PS: Kathy, I am sending my boss a copy of this too, I KNOW he will get a huge laugh out of it!!

When I am having a bad day with him I think about who else I might be working for in this place and then I remember that I have one of best. He treats me really well for Xmas, my b-day and for my wedding too.
