yes, yes and yes to it all. I am the queen of stones.
no time frame on how long it can take to pass, months, weeks, days or hours.

you know when it passes, you can feel it, and or see it, it can be black. brown in color. Urinate in a screen to catch it so you can send it to lab to see what type of stone.

Had surgery because after 7-10 of Er visits and admissions it was stuck and had to be removed.

Re: Kidney Stone

I've had a couple of stones. One passed on its own in under a day- you should try to pee in a strainer to catch it but I felt when it came out. Another stone I had was much larger and caused severe pain that didn't let up- that stone wasn't able to pass and I ended up having minor surgery to remove it. If you're in terrible pain that won't let up, I would go to the ER and they will take a CT scan to tell you what's going on.

Re: Kidney Stone

I had it happen twice. My first was 2 weeks before my wedding. It took a week to pass. During that week I would only have pain when it was moving. So it would come in waves.

The second one passed in a day.

Drink a TON of water. Like when you think you drank enough, drink more. And more. I kept a pitcher by my side.

For the first one- that took a week to pass, I got desperate and started reading up on anything and everything and one article said to drink a beer. I drank a beer and passed it the next day. Could be a coincidence, but who knows? Can't hurt right?

You will need a CT scan or something to see if it's too large to pass though- have you been to the ER?
Also, you may want to go so you can get some pain killers- giving birth hurt less!

ETA- The hospital gave me a strainer to pee in. I did NOT feel it pass. The only clue was I felt some pressure and burning like I had a UTI, and they say that is a sign of it being in your bladder...and the awful pain was gone- once it's in your bladder, you have no more pain

Re: Kidney Stone

I have had more kidney stones then I can count. I currently have at least 6 in both kidneys.

I have had Lithotripsy (2x), Ureteroscopy (this was for a stone that was 7mm) and have passed many on my own and some with the help of Flomax.

There is no way to know how long it will take to pass. Some never pass and need to be taken out. Some pass and you don't even know it.

If your Dr. thinks it is small enough to pass on it's own, the only thing you can do is drink water. And I mean DRINK. I was peeing every 20 minutes last time I was trying to pass one. Fresh squeezed lemon juice helps (Google lemon juice and kidney stones) If your Dr. hasn't already given you Flomax, ask for it. It helps dilate your ureters to help the stone pass faster. You should have a strainer to pee through. If you don't have one, you can just pee into a Solo cup and look in cup before dumping. You'll see it. Some I've passed were as small as a grape seed, but you see it.

Good luck to you. I hope it passes quickly.

P.S. if the Dr. puts you on any kind of painkillers to help you out while it's passing, TAKE COLACE. Those pain killers will stop you up so bad, it'll hurt worse then the stone! Take my word for it. Colace is key

Re: Kidney Stone

I found out in Sept I had stones after flank pain and ER visit..they told me the stone was 5 mm and I should pass it...I never did, but the pain went away. Exactly a month later I was at stony brook ER with flank pain, but this was worse..CT scan revealed a 7mm stone that was blocking the flow of urine, so I needed a stent put in.
I ended up having a ureteroscopy done at NSLIJ since my ins didn't accept Stony brook, but within 5 mins of coming home DH called an ambulance, turns out I developed a hematoma on the outside of my kidney..can I just say that the pain from the hematoma was far far worse than the kidney stone pain and the worst part..they only got the 7mm stone, the 5 mm stone is still in there. And I was in the hospital for 5 days and had to receive 3 units of blood...sorry I'm babbling ..I still think I'm tramatized.

I have an appt with Dr. Schulsinger from SB..they say he is the "stone guy" .. I pray he can make me feel good again.

Good luck..hope you pass it soon!! Chat Icon

Re: Kidney Stone

I've had several stones. One maybe 10 years ago that I was able to pass on my own. That one took several days to pass.

Then I had another one a month after my DS was born. That one landed me in the ER in excruciating pain. It was small enough to pass but it never did. I only feel pain when it moves, which luckily is not too often. I've had that one for 5 years now.

Mine are calcium deposits and I will probably always get them throughout my life. Runs in the family.
