Kids in front seat
I'm beginning to feel like the oddity...my girls are 9 (almost 10) and 11...they both weigh about 80 pounds...I am one of the few parents (as I have observed) that doesn't allow my kids to ride in the front seat. What does everyone else do at this age?

Re: Kids in front seat
From the cdc
Children under age 13 should ride properly buckled in the back seat on every trip. Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat or in front of an airbag. Airbags can kill young children riding in the front seat

Re: Kids in front seat
I didn't let DS in the front seat until 14. DD is 12 and she doesn't sit in the front yet. I figure, what's the rush?

Kids in front seat
My kids are smaller but many of their friends ride in front.
They are still in the back in boosters at almost 9 and 6.5 as they should be while Lang of their friends (especially the almost 9 year old) ride in front and without boosters.

Kids in front seat
Well I told my almost 12 year old she needs to be 16 to sit in the front lol. I don't see any reason why kids need to be in the front.

Kids in front seat
I feel like the odd man out also. Most people at school had their kids in the front seat in like 3rd grade. My 11 year old has never rode in the front seat. Why the rush? I don't get it. Maybe it makes parents feel like they're "friends" with their kids? I don't know.

I'm noticing I'm the odd one with having my 5 year old still in a 5 point harness car seat too. Most of her friends are in a high back or no back booster with the seat belt. I always followed the AAP recommendations but I feel like the only one sometimes. I would never be able to forgive myself if something happened and my kids weren't riding the safest way.

Re: Kids in front seat
Speaking from experience of a stepson who is about to be 21..., he was not allowed in the front seat of all his parents cars till 13 (including me). Ride in the back “Miss Daisy” is what I used to say.
I just moved my almost 10yr old out of a high back booster because he fit the criteria of weight and test of his knees bending over the seat.
I’m not going to lie but he is always the last; no cell phone, last in car seat, last in booster and will most likely be last in front seat.

Don’t give in!! My son was in a 5 point harness car seat till 3rd grade. And in 2nd he complained about being the only one. I told him that if he didn’t eat his veggies and grow, I would drive him to prom in the car seat.
I finally switched him to a booster because he reached the height and weight requirements. Then 3rd and 4th he did a high back booster.

I notice this too -- while everyone elses kids are jumping right in/out of the car at pick up and drop off im still helping my son to make sure the 5 pt is correct and tight. It is annoying but i dont think he is ready for just a lap belt

Re: Kids in front seat
My kid will not be in the front seat until 13 at least. I saw a couple of 2nd graders from my son's school in the front seat last year. These particular parents seem to want to be cool parents. Cool but stupid, imo.

I thought it was 14, but hey if I can lie to them and say "nope, it's 16" then I'm all for it!

My oldest is 19 and doesn't ride in the front seat lol. Granted, he has special needs and touches all my radio buttons, etc. But, he loves sitting in the back anyway! Plus, more room for my stuff on the passenger seat!

My son is 12 and 75% of the time he is in the back seat but for short local trips we do let him sit in the front. He is 125 pounds and 5'2". He is larger than some adults. I don't see an issue given his size.

Lol. My 3rd grader is in a 5 point harness. He will be at least through 3rd grade. He didn’t look right in a booster.
Yes, his friends ride without boosters at all. I think the harness is safer. I really don’t care about the other opinions. My car, my rules.

Re: Kids in front seat
As a kid I sat in the back 90% of the time all the way through high school. I’d say 16 is an ok age to sit in the front regularly.

Size isn't the issue, it's their skeletal system, it's definitely not the same as an adult. I also read something recently that said airbags are tested on 140lb grown men. They can do serious damage on kids...even ones that are tall.

My stepson was the same. We let him at 13 because of the airbag warning. He was tall as well. Airbags can really do damage to anyone, Im 4'11 and one point was 100lbs in weight as an adult.. technically I should've sat in the back. The airbag wouldn't even detect me sitting in the seat. Ahh to be thin

i'm with you as well. we just went on a road trip, and took my godson. his mom said he does not use a booster in their car. I told her I don't feel comfortable unless he has one. he's about 4'5" and 95 lbs.
DS will also be the last one to be out of the booster, in the front seat, to have a cell phone. I see no reason to make him grow up even faster.
