Kids who get car sick...

Any tips? DS used to puke in the car until we turned his car seat at 1 and then he was fine. DD got better for a few weeks after we turned her but the last two weeks has started puking again everytime I drive for over 30 minutes. Anyone have any tips to help her? Also any tips on how to make cleanup easier? Do they sell anything that I can put down (like sheet saves for the car)? I'm at my wits end and taking a 5 hours tip this weekend Chat Icon

Re: Kids who get car sick...

How old is she? Sasha puked alll the time on car rides longer than 25 mins or so. She stopped at like 18 months or so. I felt the same way as you-- and still only really do long drives at naps so she can sleep through most of the driving. We just took the car seat out a lot and washed it a lot-- and had the car cleaned, A LOT. Chat Icon

Flame me, beat me, kick me... I would leave him FF. Apparently his body isn't doing well RF.
Also I think it can't be good for him to be throwing up every time you take a car ride.

My DH was like this since very young and still is, he takes Dramaine for it, and when I asked what if DS inherited it? He said he'd wait to give a baby it, maybe till 3-4. Maybe you can talk to your ped about it, if you're not comfortable FF him.

I wasn't asking for opinions on turning her nor did I mention being uncomfortable with turning her but thanks for your input. She was puking more often rear facing so I'm leaving her FF and was just looking for remedies and/or on advice on making the cleanup easier.

Thanks Randi! She's 14 mos so hopefully she'll grow out of it soon. I'm off to BBB to try to find anything that might make cleanup easier Chat Icon Ped said she's too young for Dramamine but a little Benadryl might help Chat Icon

Re: Kids who get car sick...

I have seen a commerical for these weather proof car mats-- I think you are better off with a car accessory store, rather than BBB. There is really nothing you can put on a car seat I don't think-- and if your DD is like mine, it got on more than just the fabric Chat Icon

Re: Kids who get car sick...

what about those motion sickness bracelets? i wouldn't do benadryl (but i know it makes my DD1 a beast and not drowsy).

are you trying to cover the carseat cover or the interior of the car?

Ugh I feel your pain!

DD (almost 6 now) still gets carsick - it started at around 15 months.

When she was younger, we used to literally cut a hole in a large garbage bag and put that over her (with her head thru the hole). We ONLY did this if both DH and I were in the car to watch her. We also covered the floor and seats with towels. And one of those pocket bibs too Chat Icon We also wrapped the straps in plastic wrap because they would get all gross.

At around 2, we started using a "puke bucket" that I kept next to her carseat. She was able to grab it and puke into it if necessary.

I also always kept little baggies of pretzels in the car. Or crackers. They helped sometimes and made her feel better.

It happened less if she did not have an empty stomach.

When she got a little older, I actually let her chew gum when it gets really bad (I can see her turn green). Sometimes, after chewing for just 5-10 minutes, she feels fine.

I know your son is too young for most of that, but if it continues, maybe some of those things will work! Chat Icon

ETA: I misread your post, and just realized its your daughter that pukes. Maybe some of those things will help her!

I think you should just stay home. Never drive again.

When he gets sick does it just go mostly on himself and the seat (butt) part? Maybe line the seat with a few of those blue chucks?

This won't help you this weekend, but maybe get a few of these
car seat covers so you have a back for when he does get sick.

Good luck on your long driveChat Icon Chat Icon

I just learned that my 2.5 year old gets it when we went to Dutch Wonderland. I was like quick draw Mcgraw with the puke bucket! Coming home I gave him half a tablet of Dramamine and it helped a lot but I think your little guy is too little for that. I agree with bringing crackers and pretzels to help and having a bucket all ready with wipes in case you need to react quick. Hope the drive goes well and he sleeps.

Re: Kids who get car sick...

My DD is car sick after about 15 minutes in the car. It started when she was a little younger than 2 and now she is 4.5 years old and it has just gotten worse.

You can try the pressure point bracelets found at your local drug store.

You can try something with ginger in it. We tried the natural chews but those almost made her puke!Chat Icon They are sooo strong in flavor that they are spicy.

Obviously don't feed DD too close to travel and nothing too acidic---no fruit. If anything neutral foods like crackers or toast and still not right before travel.

Someone on here recommended "Motion Eaze" and it's sold at Walmart. I haven't tried it yet but apparently it's a liquid that you dab behind the ears & on their head & the aroma is supposed to aleviate the feelings associated with motion sickness. It's natural---lavendar scents & things like that.

Gum does sometimes help or I have these candies that I get from a Japanese Restaurant and they help.

If we are traveling far, we do Dramamine but I think my doc recommended that right when she turned 2.

Good luck! I feel your pain!Chat Icon

Re: Kids who get car sick...

We have an official "puke bucket" in our car at all times. If DS tells us his tummy feels funny, I give him the bucket, go back near him and he pukes in the bucket. Gross I know, but it has saved us many cleanups.
