Kieran James!

My sweet boy will be 3 weeks old tomorrow, and I'm finally getting the chance to sit down and write out the wonderful story of January 21st!
I started contracting at 5am, which woke me up, and I started timing them. They were only about 10 mins apart, 30 seconds each, so I let my husband sleep in a while. I got him up around 6:30 when they started getting more like 6-8 mins apart. Around 7ish, I got up to take a shower, and the contractions slowed a bit to like 12-13 mins. Basically, for the rest of the day, it followed that pattern- they stayed between 6 and 10 mins apart, but if I got up and did stuff, they went more to like 12 or 13. So I had a 3:30 dr. appt. scheduled anyway, so we went to that (and thankfully had the foresight to put my bag in the car!). They put me on the monitor when I got there, and I was contracting between 6-8 mins apart, but some of them were pretty mild. When I went in to see the doc, he checked me and I was between 3 and 4 cm dilated, complete with bloody show, to which he said "Neat!" haha. Being that I had tested positive for Group B Strep, he decided the best thing was for us to go right to the hospital so I could get started on antibiotics. So off we went. By the time we got there, checked in, got put in a room, and the doc came in to check me, I was still at 3-4cm, so given the lack of progress, he started me on pitocin and broke my water. He checked me twice more within the next hour and a half or so and still no progress. At this point, I was contracting STRONGLY every 1-2 mins. He suggested that the pain, and me tensing up from it, might be slowing down the progress, and said it was my choice, but if I got an epidural, it may start to speed things up. So I went with it. About 20 mins after the epidural, he came back to check me and said, "Well, I hate to say I told you so, but you're at 8, almost 9cm." About 15 mins later, he checked me again and said I was at 10 and ready to push. At that point, my mom, who had been in the room with me, went out to the waiting room to leave my husband and I alone for the home stretch. So I pushed for just about an hour, and then our little man arrived! I had a small episiotomy and also tore my sphincter muscle slightly, so they had to sew me up a bit, but nothing too bad. The best part was that the doctor who delivered him was the one doctor in the practice that I had never met. So he knew nothing about me or the baby or anything. Somehow, he thought someone told him I was having a girl. So as soon as he was born, he puts him on my stomach and goes "Here she is! Wait a minute, we got balls!" Hahaha. Classic- can't wait to tell him that story when he's old enough to say "balls."
The whole process was amazing, and I can't say enough about Winthrop Hospital and their staff- they are incredible!! Thanks for reading!
