Kilwin's- are they serious??

So we were looking for a place to grab dessert tonight after we went out to dinner.
We decided to drive to Patchogue and go to Smallcakes. My DD isn't a huge fan of cupcakes, so she usually will get the ice cream there (which by the way, is homemade and delicious) and I get a cupcake.
So as we are driving around looking for a place to park, I notice Kilwin's. I have heard people rave about this place so I told DH to just pull over into an empty spot a few stores up and we'll just go there since DD wants ice cream anyway.

I got a single scoop in a cup.
DD got the same.
DH doesn't eat ice cream.
So 2 single scoops. That's it. Not even a cone, not even a topping.

Total comes to $12.99 Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I thought the kid was kidding.
$6.50 a fuking scoop!
Really?
I could get 2 half gallons for that.

And by the way- the ice cream at Smallcakes, right up the road, is better and half the price. (And to be honest, I though THEY were expensive)

Oh and as we got back to our car with the most expensive ice cream on the planet, we witnessed a drug deal go down right in front of us. So, yeah.

I had no idea this place was such an utter rip off.

I feel like international delight in Bellmore is similarly priced (gelato and I find it gross though DH likes it).

I took DD to pinkberry the other day and it was $14 for a small and a kids size with sprinkles.

I think ice cream/gelato/frozen yogurt is just irrationally expensive. Personally, I’d take a baked good over ice cream any day!

I don't like dulche de leche so I got pecan praline. It was good. But not $6.50 a scoop good.
No ice cream is worth that price imo.

That is a lot for a scoop. I pay about $7 for Ben and Jerry or Haagen Daaz. That’s about 4 scoops.

How big was the scoop?

I pay about $2-3 for a scoop in a cup here and I’m fine with that. And it is gelato. Then again I don’t eat sweet things very often.

Yup, we always go to the Port Jeff location, and it's a rip off! A shake is almost $10 and that is what my son always gets. I do love their toasted coconut flavor though!

Chat Icon that's insane! I think ice cream places in general should get over themselves with how expensive they are, but this takes the cake! I've never heard of this place. Was it good at least?

It was good. But not any better than Baskin Robbins .
Nowhere near $6.50 per scoop good

I was recently at a Kilwin’s in Florida. The prices were the same, and the area I was in is generally way cheaper than Long Island.

Kilwin's is the absolute worst. We went there after seeing something at the Patchogue theater... Me, DH and DD... three of us got ice creams with toppings.... 3 sundaes is never usually a problem... it was like close to $40. I was blown away. for an ice cream snack. and the worst part - it made me sick and didn't even taste good. Snowflake in Riverhead... their ice cream is DELICIOUS ... I would pay more for that. I vowed never to step into Kilwin's again. complete rip-off. Those prices are too pretentious for what they are serving. It tasted no different than baskin robbins honestly.

I think it’s delicious...we have a few homemade ice cream places in town and all are obviously more $$ than Carvel or BR or whatever. It’s not mass produced and the ingredients are much better.

Healthier junk food? Is that how they justify it? Chat Icon

Kilwin's is VERY expensive here and they give you next to nothing in your cone or cup. We first had Kilwin's up in NH and they give you SO much ice cream for much less cost. We stopped going here, I refuse to pay $6+ for 3 bites of ice cream.

ETA - We went to the Pt. Jeff location.

Exactly. I’ll take my BR PB and choc over any of that stuff. It tastes good and I don’t eat a lot of sweets (once a year for BR). I usually just eat gelato here as that is pretty cheap.

Ben and Jerry’s also uses natural ingredients— at half the price.

And like I was saying, Smallcakes- which is a cupcake place right down the road, makes their own homemade ice cream as well that is not mass produced either and it's better and cheaper.
They are just ballsy if you ask me.

Well, yes. That’s why all natural anything is more $$ than than one with additives. Crap ingredients are cheaper.

Also most ice cream now isn’t even allowed to be called ice cream anymore. It’s all “frozen dairy dessert”.

And I think Carvel is ridiculous. We were at a festival at a local university and there was a Carvel truck and my kids wanted. One vanilla cone w sprinkles and one vanilla in a cup was $9.50. Also one scoop each.
