Kind of freaking out...
can someone put my mind at ease?
I had blood drawn at the doctor on Monday for cystic fibrosis screening. They called today to ask me to come back in to do it again because the phlebotomist used the wrong vial for this type of test. Is that really possible or do you think that the test came back bad/questionable and they want me to do it again for that reason? I asked and they said no, but I can't help but be freaked out. I am already so worked up about these tests and this certainly doesn't help.

I really think they would have told you the truth if the 1st test came back negative. As doctors they should be used to giving people bad news just as much as good news.
So I say - the person really did make a mistake with the test.

Yes, the wrong vial gets tested for different things..color coded, I believe.
Don't worry. It's their screw up.

The doctors would tell you if the test came back for CF. Plus, they would have had your Dh go for testing as well if your testing came back bad.
I am sure they are telling the truth.

I agree. Most likely they used a vial that had a non clotting agent when they shouldn't have or vice versa. The tubes are different sizes and some of them have a solution. They would not have lied. Also cystic fribrosis can only affect your baby if BOTH of you have it. You are fine!

I agree, they tell people bad news all the time and they are used to it, I am sure they wouldn't try to cover it up. Don't worry, they were probably telling the truth.

Re: Kind of freaking out...
Don't worry, I used to work in a doctors office and I know for a fact that the different colored top tubes contain different chemicals, they are supposed to use a purple top tube for the cystic fibrosis so they very well could have messed up if they didn't know what they were doing! When I had that test done they had taken 11 tubes of blood for me and ran a million tests. You'll be fine!

Re: Kind of freaking out...
Not to worry I am sure it was just the wrong vial, I believe that test has to be sent to a different state or something. Mine came back positive as a carrier and they called and had my dh's blood tested, didn't retest me.

Re: Kind of freaking out...
I doubt anything is wrong....
First time I went to give blood...(10 vials) I was called the next day to go in for another round because they left the blood sitting too long and it thickened unable to be tested!!!
GRRRR!!!
Chances are they just messed up!!

Re: Kind of freaking out...
I wouldn't think anything is wrong either though I do understand hw you feel.
Before DH and I were married I had the blood test panel for Ashkenazi Jews. While on our honeymoon, I checked our home voicemail to find a message from my OB's office that said something to the effect of: "There was an error with your testing, please call us back." Well I freaked because I was in Hawaii and had to wait to call b/c of the time difference. Needless to say, the lab did not take enough blood to perform the testing for Niemann Pick disease. So there was a lot of worry for nothing.

Re: Kind of freaking out...
Honestly, I dont think you have anything to worry about...if something came back bad, and they had to do further testing, you would have to be informed about it..it is sooo stressful...try your best to distract yourself!
