Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
Hi girls -
So I have a pretty big dilemma that I am trying to figure out what to do. I was curious to know what you girls would do in my situation.
I work in the city now and make very good money (100K++) My job is the worst. Boss is a maniac/lunatic. Work hours are from 8:30 to 5:30. If I leave on time (which gets me home at 7pm) - I get alot of crap from my boss. So - usually I will get home closer to 8pm just to NOT hear his mouth. The company is really not as good as it used to be - and a lot of people don't really want to buy us anymore. I don't want to be here when we decide to have a family because I don't think there is anyway I would be able to do both.
I am pretty much mentally checked out of here. I was looking into Banquet Sales (but it would be a huge cut in pay and full weekend hours.)
I am looking into a career in real estate sales now. I am currently taking the class and will be taking the test for my license in November. I think that is something I will REALLY enjoy doing. I love that I will have flexible hours and be able to make my own schedule pretty much (without some crazy boss stalking me all the time)
My husband is totally supportive. We just built an apartment in our basement and should be getting about 1,200 a month. It just really scares me to work off a commission only job. Do any of you girls work straight commission? Do you think I am crazy for leaving this job to go to a job where I may not make money for the first 6 months?
Sorry to ramble on!!! Any input at all would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Diana

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
I don't think you are crazy for leaving a job that doesn't make you 100% happy.
What I do think is you need to take a deeper look into real estate. B/C of the housing boom there are a lot of agents now. I wouldn't be surprised if when the market corrects, there are going to be more agents than necessary.
Also, Real Estate Agents work w/e as well- so if you don't want to work weekends, you might want to try something else.

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
It sounds to me that you may not be into the 2 full time jobs (as a mom and your career) if you are looking to have a baby you may want to start planning a career that will allow both. As long as your DH is behind you everything will work out but although that money is great you may have to focus on the next step.
Good luck.

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
Thanks! I know that there are a lot of agents out there - and that weekends are required - but I like that I can really make my own schedule.
I want to be established in another career before I have a baby (which won't be happening for a few years) and I feel that if I leave now I can really throw myself into real estate and learn whatever I can.
I def. cannot see myself working at this job when I have children. There is only one woman here who has young kids and she has two nannies to help her.

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
Hi. I just recently entered RE. and I can honestly say that i LOVE doing what i'm doing!
Hours are flexible. (you pretty much make your own). If you like meeting people, you'll enjoy it. Although working on commission does kinda $uck at the beginning, eventually once the ball starts rolling, it pays off. (i'm in contract with 2 of my listings, and once i get paid at closing in december, i will make close to what i was making annually at my previous employment)...that's just with 2 deals...i have about 4 more deals pending.
Yes, i do have to work weekends sometimes, (open houses, showings, etc)...but it's all good. I can work from home when i want or have to (like today). Overall, i do not regret my decision one bit.
However, it has to work for YOU. If what you're doing now makes you miserable, then i would think a change into any field would be an improvement. RE has it pros and cons as in any field, but if its something you think you'd enjoy, i'd say go for it!! there's certainly the potential to make lots of $$$, and you're basically you're your own boss. Good luck with everything, and if you have any specific questions, please feel free to fm me!!

Thank you so much for this!! You just gave me hope. I know that it is something I would really like doing. I am always the one to try and find friends houses/apartments when needed. I did all the work when buying my own house - its just something that I know I would love. I know at first things will be hard until I get established but I think it will pay off in the end. I will be working locally and with a flexible schedule (both of which I do not have now)

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
I think you ought to be happy when doing something. It sounds like you are very unhappy at work. And sometimes peace of mind and happiness is more important than $$$$...at least for me. And you have taken the steps to follow your dreams and what you love. You will probably eventually be able to make as much if not more. It will depend how much time you put into it and how you feel about meeting people. Best of luck to you in your decision and it's good that your husband supports your decision..that makes things a lot easier..

see, that's the thing. I knew I would LOVE doing this, b/c when dh and I were house hunting ourselves, I enjoyed it sooo much. (even though it was aggravating b/c it was US house hunting)....now, I look forward to taking clients to see houses, and i'm almost as giddy and excited as they are!!
as for the financial aspect...dh and i knew full well, we'd be taking a hit financially in the beginnig, especially having just bought a house ourselves...but we figured we'd rather struggle for a little bit in the beginning, and make some small sacrfices while i got established. it's definitely going to pay off.

Yes - I would much rather take this risk now when it is just me and DH. We can eat pasty every night for the next 6 months for all I care.

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
For me, it would depend on how much your DH makes. If DH can support you, and with renting out your basement, it sounds like you will have a pretty decent steady income.
I disagree with a poster who said you should quit if you're not 100% happy with your job. But if you are truly miserable, then you should quit.
Another option could be to work at your company until you get pregnant and then leave.

That was my original plan - to stay here and save as much $$ that I possibly can until I became prego. But - this place is really getting worse and the management is awful - I have been here for 6 years (most people don't last a year) and I've hit my breaking point. My DH can cover our expenses until I get started - and if we had to in an emergency (not that I would want to) we could dip into our saved wedding $$.

Then it sounds like you are ready to go. If I were you, I would wait until the end of the year- if you get bonuses. You have a plan and an emergency savings- you'll be fine!! Good luck!

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
This is not exaclty the same as your situation, but DH was in Restaurant Management for years. He HATED the job he was in, the hours were bad, never got to spend time with the kids, made about 80K. I worked p/t (we also have rental income) and he REALLY wanted to sell cars. The thought of him doing a job that is close to 100% commission scared the cr@p out of me! BUT, I also knew how miserable he was. So, long story short, he now sells Mercedes Benz, has been there for about 3 months, and is already making more than he used to. The first month or so was tough, but once you get the ball rolling, you can do reallly well!!
Good luck! I'm all for being happy with the job you have!

Re: Kind of Personal - Need Help!!!
Thanks! I know it won't be easy at first but I am looking forward to something new.
I have been at this job for 6 years and it is so scary to think of not coming here everyday (because these people become like family) but between the commute and all of the nonsense that we have to deal its just not worth it anymore.
I know that Real Estate will take some getting used to - especially the commission only - but i'm ready to take the chance.

You can always get a part time job at the pub down the block to make some extra cash if need be... Maybe then you can get a good deal for JC's surprise party....
