Kinda silly question about party favors
Does a pinata filled with candy and other (lets face it... ) crap take the place of a party favor or is it expected to have both?

Give the kids little baggies to fill up with pinata goodies and call it a day. I wouldn't do a goody bag plus all that pinata candy, they will be thrilled enough with the candy.

I think it’s fine. I would keep some candy and stuff off to the side and give out if someone doesn’t get a lot. To me the piñata is like a candy bar, your goodie bag and a lot of work for the host.

Any kids party we have been to had the piñata in addition to goody bags. Although I personally think it’s fine, I think the kids get disappointed when there is so goody bag at the end...

I actually LOATHE pinatas. My kids are not aggressive and always walk away with like three little pieces of candy while some other kids have overflowing bags. I will say usually someone feels bad for them and gives them a few pieces of candy but they are still upset. It's the same with easter egg hunts which is why we haven't done one of those in years.
So me personally I would say skip the piñata and do a goody bag, but if you have to do a piñata I would still do a goody bag for those that end up with hardly anything from the piñata.

When the kids were younger I did both but now that they are older piñata is the goody bag.

This is why everything has to be such a production. Not everyone is going to be happy with everything. Some kids can't eat pizza. Some don’t like chocolate cake. Some won’t like the activity, etc etc.
OP—just do what you want. Everyone else will get over it. Parties are supposed to be fun.

I think whatever you decide will be fine. I personally have done both a pinata and a goodie bag the last few years but I wouldn't think anything if someone did just a pinata.
