Kitchen cabinets and selling your house
We're going to be trying to sell the house at some point and we have the older dark wood cabinets. My mom thinks that we should clean them up and just change the hardware and it will look fine. There will be new countertop. I want to paint them and put new hardware on them. Since we're trying to update the house it will look nicer. She thinks it's too much work for me to do with the kids in the house. I think it will look nicer especially with the new countertop. The cabinets are in pretty good shape and they do match the floor, but it's out dated. If you were buying a house would you prefer painted cabinets (white) or just the color they are? I don't know what to do. I know it's a lot of work and I really don't want to do it but I think it needs to get done. What's your opinion? Thanks!

Re: Kitchen cabinets and selling your house
If they are wood, I would maybe try to sand them and re-stain them before painting them.

I would sand them and repaint them with new hardware. I watched the Home channel all day yesterday and they did that a few times unless they were going to completely replace the cabinets. It will probably make the kitchen look bigger also. Good lUck

I agree. I would prefer to see wood cabinets stained rather than painted.
To be honest, though - if they are in good shape, I agree with your mom. You probably don't have to go to the trouble of sanding and staining them to sell.

I'd prefer the wood, esp. if they match the wood floor. Just change the hardware and clean them good with Murphy's Oil Soap.

we were planning on doing some things in our kitchen but our RE told us not to bother, chances are people will change it no matter what you do.

Keep the wood - new homeowner's can make their own changes. I would restain and add new fixtures to make it look more modern.

Re: Kitchen cabinets and selling your house
My personal feeling on kitchens is..... when I am looking at houses and I see a lot of updating has ben done in the kitchen and it is not my taste, I tend to shy away from the house. I am not likely to spend a lot of money redoing a kitchen that has already been done just because I think it is ugly, because I feel like I am paying for those updates in the price of the house.
I would just clean them and update the hardware and let the new owners decide what to do with them.
