knee pain and running

I've never had any problems with my knee before but it's almost a wk I guess and I have the sharpest pain right above my knee slighty to the side. Has anyone experienced this before? Or does anyone know what it could be? I'm going for an xray on Mon but I just don't know what I did. BTW I run on the treadmill (atleast for the past few months, before that I use to run outside)

thanks

Re: knee pain and running

I had this exact pain a little over a month ago. I was training for a 5 mile race and started to feel the pain during the last mile, then I ran the race about 4 days later and felt the pain again after the race. I stayed off of it for about a week and tried to run, but the pain came back right away. I went for an Xray and everything looked fine. Basically they told me that i needed to strengthen my quadricep muscle. That muscle is attached to your knee and helps keep it stable, so it needs to be strong. I did a lot of squats and lunges and front leg lifts for a week and a half, and that totally helped! I'm back to running 3 days a week now, and so far so good! Good luck!

Re: knee pain and running

yea I don't think the xray will show anything because xrays only show problems with the bones and i think it's the tissue or something. But it sounds just like what you described. I took todays off then ran and by 3mins into the run it starts to hurt, so i tried to go a little slower but ouch it still hurt, but finished my run anyway. Now do u do these squats and lunges before you run? or how often do you do them a day?

Thanks so much :)

Re: knee pain and running

When I was running a lot I developed Ilio tibial band syndrome in both knees. It was horrible...My pain was more to the side of the knee than above but it really hindered my running. Still, I don't run nearly as much as I used to. I went to the doctor and they checked me out and told me what it was. I then went to a chiropractor for Active Release Therapy and it REALLY helped! Give it a shot!

I don't do them before runs. The week I took off from running, I did some sort of quadricep excercise everyday. then when I went back to running, I would do a routine from a dvd that did mostly squats and lunges after my run. On the days that I don't run I mix up the work out and incorporate some legs as well. HTH!

I use to run between 22-25miles a wk but I have recently went down to only 16miles a wk (4m 4x a day) so I hope I don't have to cut back anymore Chat Icon At this point I'm just trying to maintain and also enjoy "my" time. I guess I'll see what happens. Dr. apt Thurs, but going for an xray Monday. thanks

I'm gonna try and do this as well, I don't have a dvd but I can just do some on my own I guess. Thanks
