Kris Kringle

I teach 5th grade and some of the girls in my class today asked if the class can do Kris Kringle? I told them I will think about it.
Do you think it's a good idea to do with 5th graders? They have all known each other since Kindergarten. I was thinking about having it be a choice..I don't want to force anyone to do this. If I do Kris Kringle what should the $ limit be? Thank you for your help!

Re: Kris Kringle

Honestly, I wouldn't do it.

How do you know that every student in your class celebrates Christmas (which is what a Kris Kringle implies)?

You are also putting a financial burden on families that may not be able to afford it, but no one wants "their" child left out. You can put that it's optional, but that is not going to stop a bunch of hurt feelings.

If you do decide to do it - I would definitely run it by an AP first. In this very PC-world, I would be very afraid of parents calling and complaining. You need to find out if the AP would support you or not.

Thank you for your response. I teach in a Catholic school and know all my students celebrate Christmas.
I have been thinking about it and don't think I want to do it because I believe it's a bit to "adult", meaning it's the parents who really have to buy the gift. I have no idea where the girls got the idea. I did Kris Kringle in high school (also a catholic school) but maybe 5th grade is a little too young.

about doing something where each student makes a home made christmas card for their kris kringle person instead of gifts - or does a good deed for the selected person

I had a Kris Kringle once with 6th graders. I made up a permission slip and set a limit of $5. In the permission slip I also explained that the gifts needed to be in by a certain date. (like a week before the last day before vacation.) I locked the gifts in my closet and placed them under our tree during the party.

I teach in a Catholic School also and Christmas is not the issue. Some teachers in my school do it. I dont though. Even when parents say they want their children to participate, there is always that one child who forgets to bring in something for someone and that child ends up being left out.

Re: Kris Kringle

we did that when i was in second grade. i still have the gift Chat Icon and this was public school

it was a set of 3 santa claus boxes that fit in each other. i use one of them to store my foreign coins.

i remember going with my mom to buy my gift, but i don't remember what it was.

Re: Kris Kringle

I did it last year because my class parents wanted to do it and organized it. I would not do it again! Someone always ends up disappointed and someone else gets their feelings hurt because no one wants their gift. JMO.

Re: Kris Kringle

Sounds like fun. I would set the limit for $5 and probably just bring in an extra gift or two just in case someone forgot. You can always return what you bought or make sure it is something you can use as a gift for someone else or yourself!
