Lactose Intolerance or Allergy? And being brushed off by ped? Need advice.
My DD is 22 months old. Since she was 18 months, she has been having major milk issues. It's started gradually, like first she would have diarrhea if she had more than one cup of milk in a day, but then it went to any cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. It's gotten to the point that she will have diarrhea all day if she has even a tiny piece of cheese or some milk on her cereal.
I was trying to wait until her 24 month visit to bring it up, but we were there for a sick visit the other day, and I tried to talk to the ped about it. He kind of poo-pooed me, telling me, "Well if milk is the issue, put her on Lactaid."
Is this par for the course with lactose intolerance issues? You don't get referred to an allergist or anything? No testing? None of my other kids have issues with this, or any other kind of food allergies, so I have no experience. Is Lactaid OK to give to little kids? I've never heard of that before.
Oh, and also, she hasn't gained any weight whatsoever between her 18 month visit and yesterday.

my DD has a lactose intolerance. We didn't go to the allergist. I personally didn't feel it was necessary. We tried soy, lactiad, everything. And came to the conclusion by trial and error that she had a lactose intolerance. More than 1 cup of milk a day and my DD has the same issues.
Personally, i didn't feel the need to go to the allergist because i really didn't feel there was much they could do besides tell me conclusivly that you she has an allergy or not.
Most allergies, especially in children, they dont even really want to test for until their older since they can grow out of it.

We believe my daughter is lactose intolerant. Once we tried to introduce yogurt at 6mos she got a horrible diaper rash and was very gassy. We stopped yogurt and once we tried to transition to milk at 1yr the same thing happened. We ended up keeping her on formula for a few more months. Our ped said the same thing, either keep her on formula, try soy milk, or try lactaid milk. He said it's fine for them to have.
We ended up being able to transition her to milk eventually but she still had problems if she had too much dairy in a day.
Around 2yo we just switched her to lactaid full time so we didn't have to worry about the dairy factor. She's been doing fine on it for over a year.
What my ped said was basically her body is not digesting the lactic acid in the dairy products so it's coming out in her poop and basicaly burning her. She's not allergic so they didn't refer us to an allergist or a gastro or anything.

DD has a milk & soy allergy. She's 11.5 months. We found out when she was about 4/5 weeks old. Did you DD BF or FF? DD could not handle regular formula, she had to be a on elecare. We haven't seen an allergist. We went ot the PED a few times, and then he referred us to a PED GI. She diagnosed DD. We did exhaust all options, Gentle Ease, Soy Formula, Nutramigen, etc before we went to the GI. I'd rather not put DD through the testing. If I were you, I would try Soy or Lactaid first and if there's still an issue, then I'd go to a GI, then an allergist. I think if she actually had an allergy, you'd have noticed it before 18 months. I guess it's possible, she just developed it, but I'd try the othr options before taking her in to the DR.
