Re: Ladies - PLEASE do good, reliable research....
No One can truly PROOVE on either side of the fence. As the poster stated, "do your research" These celebrities really only started becoming interested in this topic as they found out their children were on the spectrum.
I'm not saying they are "wrong" I DID NOT watch the show. I'm sayiong NO ONE is truly "right" because there is no proof.
It is very scary.

Sorry Jenny - I think your hot, but I do not think you are any expert on autism. I would LOVE to hear how you lost your baby weight. I'll listen to you about that, because that is evdience I can clearly see.
ETA - the internet is a horrible place to do research - if you notice, I gave links to journals that exist somewhere besides cyberspace.
WEIGHT WATCHERS! Haven't you seen the commercials?

I don't understand the harm in listening to the other side of the story. I guess you are coming from some sort of medical side, and it was nice of you to post those links.
But, you do not have a child with autism. If these women do and they want to help those who are living with autism...where's the harm in that?
To say people are just looking for something to blame is very narrow minded. They live it day in and day out, night after night, weekend after weekend. I thank them for sharing their information and taking the time to tell us their side of the story. It helps us make a more educated decision. Jenny may not have any medical training or experience, but I am sure she has logged more then enough hours dealing with this to be able to speak on a forum.
Months ago, they did a show, no celebs just moms and the same thing was said. What do these mothers have to gain by saying it was the MMR? What do they have to lose? They are just saying what they believe could have caused their case.
And its true, it is probably genetic related. Well are they observing every baby to see if the gene is there before they give the MMR? or are they just giving it to every 1 year old.
ITA. IMO all the "research" in the world doesn't equal being a Mother and living with a child with Autism. Their knowledge is a lot more powerful to me than any medical journal or study.

While I agree with that, I believe their knowledge of living and being with children with autism is much different than making accusations about what caused it. Yes, they are very knowledgeable about living with it, but to spread information without any information to back it up can be potentially dangerous. Jenny has no idea what causes it. She has "mommy intuition", but that doesn't tell her what caused her son to have autism.

What Im trying to say is that I feel like Im being talked down to for wanting to decide about the "vaccine" issues myself .....
I dont think anyone here has said" OMG, Jenny Mcarthy said MMR shots caused her son's autism so I wont give MMR"...
No to the contrary , everyone has been asking for opinions, advice and trying to seek their own opinions on it.
No-one so far has admitted they listened and "will abide" by this celebrity's research determination....So I think the fear you have is unfounded....

Re: Ladies - PLEASE do good, reliable research....
I wrote about this before, but I am also from the mind that Vaccinations are not what is causing the Autism spike. However, i also have delayed the MMR shot till 15-18 months for my peace of mind.
I agree with both Liza and the moms who have kids with autism. I am weary of anything now that might cause it and was fascinated when they discussed the glutan free diet and how their kids reacted to that.
The 1 in 94 boys get autism freaked me out. I have two boys......scary.
I will say this....I love the Oprah show yesterday because from a mom who has limited knowledge of Autism it was fascinating to see how far these kids come, the diet information, therapy, 80% divorce rate, etc. I applaud the both of them for being so honest and open about their children. Every little bit counts.

Re: Ladies - PLEASE do good, reliable research....
I actually really hate it when celebrities pontificate on causes and act like they are experts on a subject. While I admire her courage for being out there with this information (I think awareness is incredibly important) I also think it is socially irresponsible to put a show out there on autism and not present both sides to this debate (I did not watch the show so I do not know if this was in fact done).
Yes, as a mother she has intimate knowledge with Autism but one must recognize that while she may know CERTAIN information as a mother of an autistic child that in no way makes her an expert in the PATHOLOGY of this condition. For that, she would need to have an extensive science and medical background. She may have made certain observations about her autistic child but observations themselves do not create a link.
I do not believe vaccines cause autism and I personally believe that often parents see this link because as humans we want there to be a reason for these things that are out of control. Whether it be a miscarriage, cancer, autism we want there to be a tangible explanation. Because once you have an explanation you know how you can avoid it. I think it comes from our human desire to control these terrible things that can happen. To have no reasons or causes means you cannot avoid it...

BOth sides were presented. The CDC had a statement and it was discussed.
Also...Just like you said, she made observations, and she was talking about her story and her beliefs, which I think is allowable.
She never claimed to have a "Degree" etc....
So why is everyone making it seem like she said things she did not?

I just finished watching and I agree with Donna and Janice.
Some posters are saying don't listen to her because she's a celebrity.
I think NOT listening to her just because she's a celebrity is just as bad.
She's done research, she's lived with this, it's affected her in a way most of us will hopefully never know.
I think that's a lot to dismiss off hand JUST because she has money and is famous.
Listen to BOTH sides, do what you feel is right in your heart and in your mind.

I just think its harsh to say dont listen to Jenny and Oprah, They HAVE done a lot of research as well and are not going to just blindly say things.
I agree though, everyone needs to do their own and come up with their own conclusions, BUT If someones is different then ours, it doesnt make them wrong.
Unfortunatly for every its not related bit of research, there is a contridicting piece thats also well established.
Parents have to make their own minds up about the risks and weigh them.
sometimes people do research and their sources are biased. I will never trust someone who said they did the research (I'm not saying to listen to ME, because I did research...)
I am saying, do not listen to Jenny McCarthy and Oprah and Holly. Yes, I'm harsh. I'm saying do not listen to me either. I'm getting harsher with that one
I am saying, before any of you ladies make serious decisions for your child, click off the Oprah show and do your own research. Don't let the scholar Jenny do the research for you. If she can read a medical journal, so can you. I would like to see her sources that don't say "alternative medicine" anywhere in the title. There are many alternative med journals out there and they will try hard to prove that the link is there.
A truly reliable study never tries to prove their hyptohesis. They try and disporve their hypthesis. This prevents bias. A good study does everythign to avoid bias. However, most organizations and people doing "research" on vaccinations and autism are trying very hard to prove it. That bothers me.
Like all the studies on dairy are funded by the dairy coucil. Studies about meat are funded by the meat council.
Sorry Jenny - I think your hot, but I do not think you are any expert on autism. I would LOVE to hear how you lost your baby weight. I'll listen to you about that, because that is evdience I can clearly see.

ITA! I think she has an emotional link to this as well, which makes it unbias. I only saw the very beginning, didn't she say that looking back with hindsight, there were early signs, like hand flapping and playing with wheels and hinges? before mmr shots?
sorry i'm jumping in here without all the show/discussion

watch the show again. She never says he is cured. She makes a point to say that about a bazillion times. I see your point about the money and resources though. Its just not available to everyone, but perhaps by more people coming foward such as Jenny Mccarty and HRP, maybe more funding will be given so that therapy will be available to everyone.

Therapy IS available to everyone through EI and the public school district. It might not be 24/7 care and you won't get a dietician that cooks your child's meals like I'm sure Jenny McCarthy has, but help is available. I think "remission" is a better word than "cured".

Exactly! Why take the chance? The CDC has even admitted that they can't be 100% sure there's a relation. Until you've seen a child you love who was developing in leaps and bounds, talking up a storm, showing tons of affection and love, and then just STOPPED right after the vaccination, you should not be so sure of yourself. Why risk it? Ask your doctor to test your child for an immunity instead. If they are immune, ask for proof and school districts will accept this.

I know she never says "cured" but I am just trying to think of it through the eyes of someone who is NOT educated about autism.
For example, my mother. She did not watch the show but she watched an older show where a non-celebrity mom made the vaccine/autism connection and that was it. My mother is certain that is what caused it, she knows it is a fact - end of story. She does not use the internet and she has no other resources to go to. If she saw THIS show she would ban wheat and dairy from our home and THAT would be the "cure-all". As Liza mentioned - the mothers on here are a "different breed." If you belong to a message board, I feel you are more likely to be internet savvy and just more likely to be the type of person to do your own research. I think it is safe to say that 90% of the women watching Oprah are NOT going to do their own research. My fear is that these women may judge mothers of children with autism for NOT following this plan for "recovery."
This is just an issue that I am very sensitive about so maybe I can't see what is really going on.
I do have to say though that my sister and BIL have decided to try a wheat and dairy free diet. It will be SO HARD since my nephew eats loaves of italian bread every day and drinks milk three times a day - but they are willing to give it a shot!
Jenny McCarthy's goal WAS to give a little bit of HOPE - and I guess she accomplished that. . . I will let you all know if we see any improvements!

Re: Ladies - PLEASE do good, reliable research....
You know what i learned from the show.....
Never call them autistic children, but rather children with autism. I never even though about it.....so I learned a little something.
I give Jenny and Holly a lot of credit. Yes they have the resouces and whatnot, but they also have allowed people to come into their homes to see what it is like to have a child with autism. They are celebrities and they are able to get people to focus on causes, so i applaud them for doing that.
Also, while she is a celebrity, remember she went through a divorce that she believes was caused by her child having autism. I was really listening when she (and Holly) were speaking about how men deal with it.
From my standpoint while you all might not agree with her statement about what causes it, she really opened my eyes to a lot of things that families with children wtih autism deal with.
