Ladies help! Can this be teething already?
So for the past week or so DD has been drooling a bit more than usual and putting her hands in her mouth all the time. Constantly sucking her fists etc, which she never used to do. Yesterday and today she is inconsolable with the crying- fussing, screaming, crying every minute she is awake. She sucks on her pacifer like there is no tomorrow and that soothes her for a while then she gets upset again. This morning she actually chomped her gums on my finger...like biting on my finger with her gums.
The thing is she is only 10.5 weeks old. Isn't this early?
Is she too young for teething tablets? Are even they safe for a baby that young? We are just so upset for her- she seems misearble all the time these past few days and i can't see anything else wrong with her- no fever, etc...just constantly biting on her hands and drooling. Any advice?

Sounds like teething to me. It doesn't necessarily means she's ready to cut a tooth yet. Albert started closer I think to the 12 week mark but the drooling became insane along with the hands in the mouth and trying to bite down on my finger when I was holding him.
I give him a wet washcloth that I've rinsed with water and rung out then put in the freezer in a ziplock baggie. When he's really going at it with his gums and fussy and crying I give him that and he bites down on it and it aleviates him. He also loves his Sophie.

ITA!
My ped. said that "teething" can start early... but it doesn't actually mean they are ready to cut a tooth.
I also did the washcloth thing... but didn't put it in a ziploc baggie...
Sophie helped also.
Various kinds of teethers were helpful too.
The teething tablets honestly did NOTHING for us. When Loey was inconsolable and we could see the tooth almost coming through, we gave him Tylenol & Motrin (alternating) for 2-3 days until the tooth broke through the gum.
He's got 4 coming in now and we did the Motrin for about 2 days, but once he's in a good mood (not inconsolable anymore) we stopped the Motrin because we just don't like to constantly be giving medicine... KWIM?

Both of my kids were early teethers - DS around 10 weeks and DD at 8 weeks - so it's possible!

Thanks! I agree about not wanting to medicate them all the time. I just feel bad that she is constantly uncomfy and upset. We JUST got through the stomach issues, reflux, etc- and were having a good couple of weeks- and now this. I feel like this poor baby will NEVER be happy or comfortable.

jack LOVED the birdseye burp clothes around that age. he would suck on them, they massaged his gums!
Gerber makes them - great for feeding and as changing table liners too

Question for you- how long was he cranky with it? Was it just a few days here and there? On and off? Since no teeth have come through yet, (and probably won't for awhile )will it be like this until the tooth actually surfaces? Because I am not sure we can go through days like this for weeks on end!

no, its hit or miss. It could also be a growth spurt! At 8-10 weeks, their salavary glands also become more active which could be part of the drooling. MOST babies start drooling around this age, teething or not.
Its really not THAT bad. He had maybe 1-2 nights where his sleep was disturbed. I think they just learn to deal with it until teeth really start coming through and thats when it gets really tough

Re: Ladies help! Can this be teething already?
My DD is almost 4 months and she has been drooling at eating her hands like crazy the past few weeks. We keep a bib on her and the bib and her shirt are always so wet. My ped checked her mouth the last visit and said there was nothing cutting through, but looks like she is not alone

My DD will be 4 months old on 9/10 and she has been drooling a lot and sucking/"chewing" on her hands for about 4 or 5 weeks now. She doesn't show any signs of teeth coming through so I assume it's just the normal increase in saliva production and increased awareness of her hands. Babies learn/explore their environments by putting things in their mouths. What are other signs of teething that are ONLY related to teething? Gums turning white where the tooth is breaking through? Palpation of the gums and feeling a bump?
