Ladies who get shellac or gel manicures please come in.

I don't get a Shellac mani often- mainly due to time constraints and the cost, but I noticed that the last few times I went, they never polish my nails all the way down to the cuticle.
They always leave like a space that looks like the polish has started to grow out a little.
This bothers me because my nails grow pretty fast and my main issue with shellac manis is that I have to get them redone even before they chip because of grow out.
So to start out with what looks like a week of grow out is just a little annoying.
It's like they want you to have to come back sooner or something.

This has happened at 2 different nail salons already.
Anyone else notice this?

with a mani, they never do that. I hear it allows cuticles to breath.

Maybe just ask them to go as close as they can to cuticle.

YESSSSSSS! This happened to me as well and it bothered me so I haven't done one since. I don't know if it'll destroy or hurt the cuticle..?

That used to drive me nuts. I've been using a new place and they actually go all the way up to the cuticle. I got them done last Thursday. I just checked them out and I still have no space on most of my fingernails.

I have been getting the shellac mani for a long time now at the same place and they always go up to the cuticle. I guess it depends on the place.

I know what you mean b/c the growth is the exact reason I don't get gel manicures anymore. They may not chip for a couple weeks, but it doesn't look so great when there's 1/2 inch of growth at the nail base Chat Icon

Like everyone said, i think it depends on the place. I've had crappy jobs done where they don't go close enough to the cuticle, but I've also had places do a great job where it looked good for many days.

They do that because if the gel is touching your cuticle or the side skin they are more likely to lift. I do my own and the instruction videos I've seen always say to basically stay away from the cuticle.

This is exactly the reason. If the gel is touching the cuticle it will lift and peel. It can also bleed into skin and under the cuticle which is sometimes hard to remove before it cures.

If you don't like that it is growing out, but don't want to remove it yet, you can put regular polish on top. When you remove the nail polish just remove it with non-acetone remover and the shellac will be fine underneath. If you're getting CND Shellac, they have a line of regular polished called Vinylux that matches many of the Shellac colors. Not availble in stores, but some Salons may retail it.

That being said, they should always try to get as close as possible without hitting the cuticle to minimize that issue.

I have the at home gel manicure set and the instructions say to stay away from the cuticle...
I've only done it twice so I'm still getting the hang of it but on one nail, I got a little closer to the cuticle and I can see it lifting or kind of curling at the egde.

--Very interesting to learn the reason why. I noticed this on Sunday when I got my second gel manicure.
