Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
So I was given the number to schedule the Maternity Tour at the hospital last night at my appointment, and was told that at the tour I will be given information on Lamaze.
I know from this site that there is a fee for Lamaze, and I told DH this. To which he consults his brother (who's wife just had a baby a the same hospital) and they didn't do Lamaze. DH's brother said it's a waste of time and $, then said "Besides, the epidural takes care of all that and the nurse tells you what to do. That breathing crap doesn't work"
Okay, this was their first child, how would they know? And I am sure the classes are more than just how to breathe!
Any thoughts?? DH is leaving it up to me, and I said let's do the tour and see what they offer for Lamaze.
TIA!!

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
We decided to do it. DH wants to be "prepared." If nothing else they also talk about what you may experience during L&D, and although it might freak out some of us, DH wants to know ahead of time so he does not panic
ETA: This is our first baby too, so I am only sharing our thought process on it.

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
In reality, your brother/BIL is correct, it ALL goes out the window once you're there. The nurses will tell you how to breathe and when to push and when not to. The main thing you would get from a class is knowing what is going to happen during labor/delivery. I didn't take a class with my first and my nurses were thrilled because they could guide me better since I hadn't "trained" myself to want to do things ONE way. Oddly, not once did they tell me how to breathe!

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
I don't think you "need" to do it at all. I did it though, and while I had a c/s, I'm glad I went.
I looked forward to it each week (did 4 week session) and got more excited for the new addition. Actually, I did the breathing techniques during labor--well, when my DH "coached" me correctly!!
My DH on the other hand...still complains about how boring it was!

I didn't do it, and I honestly believe it wouldn't have helped me if I did.

I dont think you "need" to do it, but I signed up DH & I for classes because I want to be prepared. I feel I will be scared if I dont know what to expect or some knowledge about what is supposed to happen and when

Jill- Just my 2 cents... I'm not going to do it. I feel that I would learn it all, and it would go straight out the window when I got to the real thing anyway

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
I don't think you need it per se, but it was somewhat comforting to see all of the tools that they use (or might need to use) during labor/delivery. Our wasn't just about breathing and stuff. They showed different techniques you could use while laboring at home.
We did a 1 1/2 day class at the hospital and it ended with a tour of the Marternity floor.

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
I did it with my first and it did not help me ONE bit. With my 2nd, I went out and bought the Bradley Method books, and WOW what a HUGE difference. With #1 I was BEGGING for the epidural at 2 centimeters. With #2, I made it to 7-8 before I felt like I "needed" it.
Good luck whatever you do!

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
Its part of the childbirth classes that I will take so we will do it. I wouldnt have done it if I wasnt taking the childbirth classes. I believe it is a waste of money.

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
I believe people when they say it's not necessary but at the same time we did sign up for it. We figured it would be informative and time to spend together trying to understand all this. You can go either way.

Re: Lamaze. To do or not to do?!?!
I didnt do it with my first pregnancy, and to tell you the truth, when I was in labor, I dont think I would be able to concentrate on things I learned. You have to trust your body and let things happen naturally. BUT, some people really benefit from it and find it easier to labor after going. So, its really up to you.
