Laminate Floors Installation

Do it yourself job or have it done?

Dh is not handy at all but I am and was thinking about installing it myself with some help from Diana1215 in two small rooms in our house.

Is it really difficult?

Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Laminate Floors Installation

Can you use a table saw?

My father in law and I did it - Putting the floor down was easy, measuring and doing all the cutting was a PITA

Re: Laminate Floors Installation

Do it yourself.

My Dh is useless with tools and one day I just decided to give it a shot. If you are not afraid to use a table saw then I would do it yourself. It took me one full day to do a 25x15 room. You need the starter kit, a hammer and a table saw. I got the kind that had the backing and waterproof material already attached to the flooring so it was just a matter of laying it down and banging it into place. I will say the next day I was so sore but it was worth it.

if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I can use a saw and these rooms are fairly small...so I think this is definately doable.

thanks everyone, I'm sure when we're ready to start I'll have more questions!

Re: Laminate Floors Installation

You have to be careful about your floor. Is it level, is it cement under whatever is there?

If your floor is not level you will have to lay a subfloor underneath the laminate.

If your floor is cement, you will have to lay a protective layer under the laminate to prevent dampness which will ruin your laminate flooring.

Also installing laminate flooring over an uneven floor will result in you cracking or warping your laminate flooring.

Good point, the house is brand new, so there are no floors down as of yet in these rooms, just plywood...

that may be good. Plywood is better than a cement floor. Hopefully it will be level and you will have no worries.

I paid someone to do it and I felt it was worth it.

I love doing things like this....DH is useless when it comes to this stuff, a good friend of ours is a contractor and he asks him to do this stuff for us or he'll pay someone..

I say why not let me try to do it..I enjoy it..I know strange lol

thanks for your help!

Let me know how it goes. I am in the same situation. We currently have pergo but want to put down a different pattern. From what I understand as long as the plywood is in good condition you can use that as a subfloor. PS- Home Depot has a sale on flooring right now.

Kristen- I love DIY home projects and DH hates them! He is not handy at all! He was laughing at me last night because he came home to me patching a hole in the wall and making cupcakes at the same time.

Chat Icon a jack of all trades

funny you say that b/c we had a huge hole in our wall in our apt and I went to home depot for spackle, a patch and other things to repaired it and dh came home and was like "who did this"? "I don't understand, how did you know how to do this." lol

I put up all the fixtures in my bathroom and my DH was at work..he couldn't believe it.

I wouldn't attempt the laminate flooring though..

I will paint my bathroom though.
