laminate or real wood with dogs?
We have 2 dogs and a 9 months old baby.
Which one is best for our family?
Lots of back and forth between the backyard and the LV where either the laminate or hardwood floor will be installed.

Laminate will be less expensive and is very durable but even the best laminates do not have the look of natural wood. Real wood floors can always be refinished when they start to look bad.

Re: laminate or real wood with dogs?
I have real hardwood on my living room floor. I have a very large, active dog who is always in there. I have had it for two years, and it looks fine.
My parents have laminate wood and a small dog. It is about a year old and it has been fine for them.
I know that does not give you a definitive answer, but maybe part of it is also which look you like better.

I have two dogs and a baby and the laminate is no problem at all. It is in our foyer and kitchen which has the most traffic and doesn't have a scratch on it.

My mom got engineered wood. Its not laminate but its not solid wood but you can sand and stain it up to 3-4 times in its lifetime.

I agree with engineered wood. I have hardwood and right by my front window where my dog barks at people it's pretty scratched up. We've only had it 5 years and it needs to be refinshed

Re: laminate or real wood with dogs?
we have some laminate & some hardwood, we are switching over to all hardwood. The clicking of my dogs nails on the laminate makes me nuts, its doesn't seem as bad on the wood. Both have been very durable with the dog though.

Re: laminate or real wood with dogs?
We have engineered downstairs (because its a subfloor) and real wood upstairs. They look a lot alike, but the real wood holds up to everything a lot better. The engineered is much softer and scratches a little bit easier. If you can get real wood that's what I would choose.

ITA with this. We had laminate and although it stood up to claws, it did begin to peel when Loki knocked his water dish over & it sat all day while we were at work. The engineered floor is more durable and looks more like hardwood.

We have laminate in our den because it is slab underneath and hardwood in the rest of the house. With three cats, the laminiate doesn't show signs of anything, but the hardwood definitely has scratches in the finish and they ruined part of the floor in the kitchen where they kept spilling the water.
