Landlord Vent
About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that our stove was making a hissing sound when I used it. I called our landlord and told him about it. He didn't seem concerned at all. The stove is about 25 years old.
Fast forward to this weekend. Me, DH and my in-laws went out for lunch and when we came back, there was a strong smell of gas in the kitchen. I freaked out and called our landlord. He was conveniently away for the weekend and didn't return my call until late last night. He really didn't seem all that concerned again. He said he would come over after work and check it out.
He came over this afternoon and said he didn't smell anything and would look into having a friend of his come over and look at it. He is a self-proclamed "re-finisher" and would rather fix this than buy a new stove.
I am petrified to use the stove for fear of an explosion. I told him this and he basically shrugged and said he'll look into it.
Do you think I have the right to flat out ask him to buy us a new stove?

Re: Landlord Vent
You can ask him, but you may be better off buying a stove and taking it off of rent. Or buying it and taking it with you when you move.

Re: Landlord Vent
I would call the local gas company and have them come in and check it out. If there is something wrong with the stove, they can write a report for your landlord. It might, also, be the connection to the stove if you are smelling gas without the stove being on. No matter what it is, I wouldn't use that stove until I knew it was completely safe.

Re: Landlord Vent
agreed with calling your gas company, and yes you can go buy yourself a new one and take it off the rent, and the land loard can not do anything about it... it is your safty... and if he gives you a hard time you can tell him to look up on the social sevice web site about your rights.

Re: Landlord Vent
Call your gas company and have them do a reading. They have a machine where they can detect leaking gas. Free of charge. I've had them do it when I lived in NYC, better safe then sorry. Call them and tell them you smell gas, they will be right over.

Good idea!!! This way you have a professional came in, and if anything is wrong it's in writing. Also, keep your windows open as well. You don't want to be breathing that stuff in, it's deadly

Re: Landlord Vent
your landlord is an azz! my goodness, your safety is at risk and he doesn't give a crap!! i would totally do what the other posters have mentioned, and i would seriously consider getting a new stove entirely!! (and of course, deduct it from the rent) good luck, and keep us posted.

Re: Landlord Vent
Thanks everybody!
I FM'd roxygrl (spelling?) before and told her a bit more of the situation....
We are in an illegal 2-family house and I am afraid of calling the gas company for fear of our landlord giving us the boot if it is found out that he has an illegal.
I know that my safety is much more important, though. I really just don't know what to do.

Definitely call the gas company, most likely they won't care about the apartment being legal or not.
