Latte Liberals and Nascar Republicans

Do you think you can tell someone's political leaning (or really anything about them) by what kind of car they drive, what they eat, or what kind of entertainment they enjoy?

I'm reading a book that talks about the common conceptions that

Liberals
Drink soy lattes
Drive European cars
Go to museums and plays
Are intellectuals


and

Conservatives
Eat steak
Drive big american cars
Love Nascar
Are simple in their ways/straight shooters

Does the stereotype hold true?

I have to say I fit the latte liberal stereotype pretty well. I drive a german car, I'm a vegetarian, I love my lattes, I prefer museums, plays and books to almost any other form of entertainment, and though both are compliments in my eyes, I'd rather be called an intellectual than a straight-shooter.

Why is it that tastes in other areas seem to indicate political leanings?

I hate soy, drive a Nissan, eat steak, hate Nascar, go to museums and plays, and am both an intellectual and straight shooter depending on the circumstances.

I do seem to also fit the Liberal stereotype...

Vegetarian
LOVE books museums and plays (DH and I always go to the Metropolitan Opera for New Years Ever)
I am an "intellectual" to non-intellectual crowds, but I am less of one to intellectual crowds...
