Layette--Where should I shop for it and should I accept MIL's offer to buy the whole thing?
Wait--before you say Denny's, I already know that place!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My MIL offered to buy the layette for us. This would be an entire set of clothing for ages 0-6 months. She just did this for my SIL and they went to Denny's.
She offered to do the same for me, at Denny's or at any other store that DH and I would like. But then she also said that if we don't want to do a formal layette, she'll buy us other things instead.
I checked out Denny's and I love their things but the prices are jacked up. They have many of the same items at Lord and Taylor and Nordstrom for less money. There were outfits that were sold in packets of 2 or 3 at the department stores for $30-40. It seems like Dennys had the same exact ones, not packaged together and they were $30-40 or so each item. The problem is that the department stores that we went to were lacking in service. Is there another small store like Dennys?
Also should I just have my MIL buy something totally different? The nice part about this is that all the clothes shopping will be done in one place and in a small amount of time. We can do so much better on price just getting pieces here and there, but I am very fatigued, so it may be difficult to really shop. And, did you ever notice that shopping and having to pee every 5 minutes is annoying?
Store suggestions? Should I just have my MIL buy us other things or is this a nice easy way to get clothes? I sort of feel like that is what she offered and we should not change that, even though I know she won't mind. I think she is looking forward to picking clothing with me. We will also need so many other things because I don't think I am having a shower (Jewish tradition not to).

I would first tell your MIL thank you, then I would explain that you love the clothing that Denny's stocks but that they are jacking up the prices and you would rather her $$ go farther. With that said, I would give her the choice of how she wants to spend her $. If she feels comfortable knowing that she is spending more for the same thing -- then that is her $$ and how she wants to spend it. I am going to say that Macy's and Lord and Taylor will not hold anything for more than 24 hours. As someone else in the same situation you are in, and cannot have anything in the house before the baby is born, I would love to know where denny's is so that I can scope it out. L.

My MIL offered the same thing for the twins with the condition that we hit the outlets! She knows how I hate to pay full price for anything! LOL....
Meanwhile, this is the lady who only shops at Talbots, Ann Taylor, & Nordstroms!

If she really is set to get you clothing, I would be honest and let her know that while you love Denny's clothing - they prices seem a bit steep for a baby that won't be able to wear the clothes for very long. Does she shop regularly in L&T and Nordstrom? She may not be the slightest bit offended to go to other stores she frequents and can get more clothes for the baby for her money

Is there anything big that you would want from her? I feel like you get sooooo many clothes from so many people (even if you may not have a shower) and I personally did tons of shopping for the baby on my own. I would go into stores, see something I wanted and get it. This kid has enough clothes to last him until 18 months (I swear)
So - maybe she can get you something a little bigger? A piece of furniture? A toy chest? Something to that effect?

It does not have to be bought at one store, that is the more traditional way of doing things, before registries, etc.
I agree with Diana that maybe you should see if there is something big you need besides clothes. I have only bought a few things for DS (like 3 onesies) and I have clothes til 4T!!!! People bring clothes to the hospital, to visit, etc.

It doesn't have to be. I just don't want to make my MIL crazy with going to a ton of places. I don't want to just buy and ask her for money.
I like the idea that we can get this done at one place and maybe free up some time. I am self employed and there is always work to get done, especially now that I am planning to be out at the end of the year. I have thought of doing a smaller layette from Denny's and then some stuff from a department store.
I think that MIL likes to be loyal to the same stores a lot of the time, especially at a place like Denny's, where she has met the salespeople. She was glad I told her that I "investigated" Denny's pricing but she is still willing to pay their prices or let me decide whether there is another place I like. Maybe it's just because she wants to be fair and she bought SIL's layette at Denny's but I think she feels that Denny's has good service.
