Leandra's Law arrest after mom of 5 YO and 10 month old involved in two hit-runs, then overturns SUV

From Newsday -

NEWSDAY - CLICK

A Manhattan woman was arrested Tuesday and charged with driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law after she was involved in two hit-and-run accidents on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway before overturning her Jeep -- with her two young children in the vehicle, police said.

Megan Pieroni, 38, of 233 E. 50th St., was charged with DWI, two counts of aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and with leaving the scene of an accident. Nassau County police said she was hospitalized with an arm injury and will be arraigned "when practical."

Police said Pieroni, driving a 2008 Jeep Cherokee southbound on the Seaford-Oyster Bay, was involved in "a noninjury auto accident" near Exit 12, the Northern State Parkway, at about 3:05 p.m. Tuesday. She fled the scene, police said.

A few minutes later, police said, Pieroni was involved in a second accident -- this time with a minor injury to a victim in the other auto -- at Exit 7, Hempstead Turnpike.

Again, police said, Pieroni fled the scene.

At about 3:10 p.m., police said Pieroni struck a guardrail and overturned the Jeep on the shoulder at Exit 3, Route 105, Jerusalem Avenue, in Seaford.

Police said arriving highway patrol officers "detected the odor of alcoholic beverage" on Pieroni's breath and said her speech was slurred and that she had bloodshot eyes.

She was given a breath test -- with a positive result.

Police said Pieroni, her 5-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter were all taken to a hospital for evaluation.

One of the children suffered what police called "a minor arm injury," though police did not identify which child was injured. The children were both treated and released to family members, police said.

Leandra's Law is named for 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, who was killed when the car she was riding in, driven by a drunken driver, overturned on the Henry Hudson Parkway in October 2009.
The law makes it a felony, even on first offense, to drive drunk with a passenger under age 16 in the vehicle.

A TEN MONTH OLD AND A FIVE YEAR OLD -- And in the middle of broad FUUCKING daylight no less!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Leandra's Law

-Elevates the crime of endangering the life of a child by drunk driving to a felony with up to four years in prison; fifteen years for injuring, and twenty five years for killing a child.

-Mandates every convicted DWI offender to install an ignition interlock on their vehicle so they cannot drink and drive again.

**Repeat offenders account for 1/3 of drunken driving fatalities**

It stated that one of her children suffered an injury.

I fuckking have no tolerance for stupid, selfish people like this!

I wish they would lock her ass up!! Take away her children...whatever needs to be done to teach her a lesson of a lifetime.

Why people feel the need to drink and then get in a car - much less drink & drive with your poor innocent children in it is beyond me. I mean really?? You're THAT FUCKKING STUPID!

I don't understand why this isn't something in all vehicles at this point. I'd be more than happy to have it in mine. I get that it might feel a little big brother-ish, but it's a small sacrifice to make for the COUNTLESS lives that would be saved because of it.

And worst of all, what are you doing drinking and driving with YOUR CHILDREN IN THE CAR??? I just don't understand how people can be so stupid and selfish. She's lucky her children weren't badly injured or killed. I really hope this woman gets help and there's someone around who will make sure this never happen to those children again.

Newsday posted the article on Facebook and in the comments section some guy who was on the expressway during the accident said mini Smirnoff bottles came pouring out of her car and were scattered on the expressway. I also read on a local mom group I'm in that a bystander was holding one of the kids until the cops and ambulance arrived.

I just DON'T understand people.... First off, why would you drink that much to begin with when you have your YOUNG children in your care? Second, how on earth do you get in the car once you've had enough to blow anything over the limit???

Totally agree! She's from manhattan where she can get completely drunk and NOT have to drive. Yet for some reason she's on Long Island in a car with her children. Children some would borderline kill to get their hands on and yet she has total indifference for their lives. I am glad she has an arm injury. That poor 5yo. She was probably so freaking scared.

What the eff are you doing hammered at 3pm on a Wednesday?!

Although I don't know why I'm shocked. The guy that hit Ken's car, hit it, got out of his car still holding the vodka drink he was drinking, took another swig, put it down in the middle of the LIE and casually walked to the side of the road and sat in the grass.Chat Icon

Apparently drinking WHILE driving happens more than you'd think Chat Icon

There was another DWI arrest with a child in the car last night in Patchogue...the woman crashed into a Subway storefront. And then the guy that crashed into a house in Seaford...high on drugs at 5pm on a Thursday. What is wrong with people....scary to think how many people are driving around while impaired. And its not even at night anymore....

I can't even imagine how scared that 5 year old must've been...crashing 3 times inside of a few minutes!

Re: Leandra's Law arrest after mom of 5 YO and 10 month old involved in two hit-runs, then overturns SUV

And there was this story from 8/31

A Mastic Beach woman faces a felony DWI charge after police say was intoxicated while driving with a 2-year-old in her car early Sunday.

Julieann Klopfer, who was injured last Tuesday along with two others when she ran a red light in West Babylon and triggered a three-car crash, was stopped at a police checkpoint on the south ramp of eastbound Sunrise Highway at exit 58 in Shirley at about 12:40 a.m.

Klopfer, 33, was found to be intoxicated and her fiancé’s son was in the backseat of her 1998 Mercedes, police said.

Klopfer is charged with DWI with a child passenger 15 years old or younger–a felony under Leandra’s Law–DWI and endangering the welfare of a child. Klopfer will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

Seven other drivers were issued traffic summonses at the checkpoint, police said.

And this one this morning:

Manhattan Woman Accused of Driving Drunk on LIE With Son in Car:

Police have arrested a Manhattan mother they say drove drunk on a Long Island highway with her 3-year-old son in the car.
Police stopped a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer on the Long Island Expressway Monday night near Exit 49 north in Huntington for veering out of the lane, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The stopping officer arrested the woman on felony DWI charges after an interview. She was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
The child was put in a family member’s custody.

This law came too late for some poor families. SO glad that's it's a felony charge now! Please please God let this deter people. UNreal
