Learning to share... at what age do they understand?

my dd will be 15m on the 22... and hates sharing. She freaks out as soon as she sees a child walking towards her toy. She pushes them away. I take her to mommie and me once a week and not sure how to handle when she gets this way. I usually just try and divert her attention and tell her "its okay .. share.." I dont think she understands and then cries.. and I feel like cr@p...

Re: Learning to share... at what age do they understand?

miki is 21 months and she has her off days

she says "MINE" about everything and I just calmly say "no miki, this is mommy's, would you like to see it?"

she says yes and then I will give it to her

At daycare, somedays she is great with sharing, other days not so much

They are perfect for each other

I showed miki the card you sent the other day and I said "this is Lucas"...she said "hi Lucas", grabbed the card and gave it a kiss Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think I read somewhere that most kids don't really understand sharing until they are 3, which wasn't comforting to me! DS is the kid who trots up to the other kids and takes their toys, so I've been trying to explain sharing.

I think all you can do is model it and correct them when they do this or let your daughter know that everyone plays with the toys.

Honestly there isnt some magical age when all of a sudden a baby/toddler/child learns to share...

Developmentally a toddler is about 2 before they are ready to share. It's at about this age that they learn about possession...in order to be able to share something you have to be able to understand about possessing it. You'll usually know when your child starts understanding possession b/c that is when the MINE MINE MINE starts.

There is very little sharing going on while toddlers are playing b/c they parallel play (play next to each other) rather than with each other. Not until they are 3 do they start playing together....

But that doesnt mean that suddenly at 3 children fully learn to share....they take turns better would be a more appropriate explaination...
