Leaving NY
If you were to leave NY where would you go and why?
I would go to Florida or South Carolina. Besides politics, I love the weather and all the sunshine. There is so much more to do there, and cheaper. (Almost $400 to go to splish splash this summer was ridiculous when we spent half the day waiting in lines and looking at dirty diapers on the ground) I loathe the cold weather. There is nothing to do around here from December to March.

Leaving NY
We are looking into South Carolina or Tennessee. More South Carolina though. Taking trips to visit areas that seem good on paper in Jan/Feb.

Re: Leaving NY
Florida. The further south the better. I have friends who live in the Orlando area and sometimes it gets a bit chilly in the winter. I want to be as close to Cuba as possible

Somewhere south by the coast.
It is truly embarrassing to live here anymore. I just saw on the news that man responsible for Christmas tree attack in the city is out, no bail!!!!
It is disgusting!!!!
My husband and I were just saying how we miss taking the boys into the city and staying for the weekend and seeing a show and the tree.

I wont' go near the city. It's a lot more unsafe than you see on the news. I don't feel comfortable bringing my child there at all And that's sad. Because 2 short years ago it was very safe and I never felt that way. I used to love the city

Leaving NY
We have a condo in Ft Lauderdale. Not sure I would want to be there full time but love it part time.

Re: Leaving NY
I want to go to Florida. DH wants the Carolina’s. He still wants “some seasons” so NC is his choice. But honestly, I’d rather just make my way to Florida now and stay. I feel like as we get older, another big move will be too much.
I’ve wanted to leave NY for a long time. It’s become a cesspool. There’s traffic all the time everyday second of the day, so many people are “me, me, me”, I can’t take the “one uppers” … just sucks here.

Re: Leaving NY
We left for the first time after college and moved to FL. I absolutely HATED it down there, we lasted 4 years and came back to NY.
Two and half years ago we moved again this time Western NJ. It's beautiful and a lot better than I expected as NJ wasn't even on my radar however, we were targeting the New England area which is STILL where we want to land eventually.
I like the seasons, cold and snow.......... down south is definitely not for me. I'm a northeast girl through and through.

Re: Leaving NY
I want to have dozens of acres of woods, so I can camp in my "backyard" and not see or hear any civilization. Can't do that on LI, unfortunately.
I'd like to move somewhat nearby. PA, NJ, MD, VA, NC. Not too far South, and not too far inland.

I've heard CO is beautiful but New England is definitely the dream for me. Every time I've been up there it feels like home, I just love it! Maybe we'll be New England neighbors one day!

Re: Leaving NY
South Carolina for sure. We already bought a house down there and were going to relocate temporarily for a year but then didn't have to. I love it there, especially for families. I would miss skiing though but I guess I could take a couple trips out west over the winter. Still wish we could pull the trigger but my kids would be devastated. My son is in a group of 5 boys who have been friends since they were 1 years old and he's in 8th grade now. I don't think I could take that away from him. They all have a very special friendship.
When we retire though we will probably split time between florida, south carolina, NY and martha's vineyard.

Leaving NY
Definitely South Florida as I own a house in Palm Beach. Although I would reverse snowbird back to NY or somewhere in New England for the summer months.

Leaving NY
My dream would be someone further North- maybe Vermont or Massachusets. I love the fall too much to move south. My in laws live in Florida and we've visited for Thanksgiving and Christmas and it doesn't have the same feel. I also hate the heat and they never leave their house. They never go outside be it's too hot- lol.

I got my vaccine at the Javitts Center last April and the city was beyond disgusting. I've been back to the city a bunch of times since and it's been a lot better. I have stayed primarily in midtown in crowded areas. Definitely not even close to what it used to be but I no longer feel like I am going to get mugged in broad daylight.

I live in the Triangle area of NC (Raleigh, Durham) and we're really close to mountains so we see pretty leaves changing in the fall.
I really like my area b/c it's a rather liberal area with 3 major universities (UNC, Duke, NC State). We're 2 hours from the beach and 2 hours from the mountains.

We would go to NJ, PA, or as far as Virginia but no further south. I really love all my seasons. I despise Florida. My in laws are there and its just too hot and humid and I'm not a fan of the whole southern mentality. Also the pace is too slow for me. Just running to the grocery store takes so long, everyone moves at a snails pace. IDK, its just not for me.

Leaving NY
I would stay in the NE. I am an NE girl and don't think I could take living anywhere else. If money was no object though and my husband didn't need to work, I'd live in the Caribbean somewhere on the beach! We had/have the opportunity to move to either Seattle, North or South Carolina or Texas and we turned it down. Texas just isn't my thing and the Carolinas are terrible with special education and services. Seattle could be a choice but it's too far from all our family.

Re: Leaving NY
We moved to NJ and love it. Every time we go back to my parent’s home and visit LI I feel sad. It just is not what it once was and you can absolutely see the decline of LI. I feel terrible saying this but NJ has better bagels and pizza. I know, sacrilege, but over the past ten years there has been a substantial decline in LI restaurants. I think people were priced out and moved. I love our school in NJ and NJ is rated number one or two in the US for education. Our roads are a million times better than yours. It is not even funny or a comparison anymore. I don’t know what to say because I know how much you pay in taxes, but you are not getting your money’s worth. NYC under Diblasio is disgusting. We drove by last Sunday and the city is floundering. So many boarded up buildings. The homeless are out and drug dealers are in the streets with zero consequences because you could see deals happening in broad daylight. No police. No one stopping it. I was flabbergasted.

When we first moved to NJ I missed LI and constantly wanted to go back. Now, I cannot imagine moving back to the island.
I love that when living in NJ you can literally move around easily in all directions, it's so nice to not be locked (trapped) by the city. I never deal with traffic anymore either which is amazing. If something is 20 miles away it takes 20 minutes to get there unlike LI where 20 miles means an hour on the road.
I also fell in love with all of the nature and wildlife here, especially the vast amount of hiking trails. I had no idea I even loved to hike until moving to NJ. I don't think I could give up all of the open space and vast amount of nature that I've gotten use to now, I have found that I really love this quieter, more rural way of life. I had NO idea that NJ could be like this.
And I agree with you, so far the schools we are in have been excellent! My kids are very happy and learning so much.
