LEEP Procedure
A really good friend has to have this procedure.
I'm scared for her!
From what I'm reading online, many women have had it and are fine....
Any feedback?
Also, will I be able to visit her the next day or do you think she won't be feeling well?

Re: LEEP Procedure
I had a LEEP done about 4 years ago. I felt fine, just a little groggy from the anesthesia, but that was it. There were no side effects at all.

Re: LEEP Procedure
I had a LEEP procedure done December 2005. I went into the hospital, they knocked me out and did the procedure, and a few hours later I went home.
I think I rested for the rest of the day when I got home and was perfectly fine. For me, it was no big deal.
I went on to have DS in September 07 and am pregnant with #2, due in December.
I actually still contact my old GYN who did the procedure and thank her for my son! I think she did such a wonderful job that I was able to go on to have a healthy pregnancy.
Since that procedure, I have had normal paps ever since!

Re: LEEP Procedure
I'm so scared because she said she has high grade pre-cancerous cells....
I don't know much about this, but those words scare me...

Re: LEEP Procedure
I had it done November 2006 - just a few months before I got pregnant.
I was awake and totally afraid, but it was fine. It didn't help that there was construction going on outside the hospital while I was have the procedure and I was trembling from head to toe from the anesthesia but in hindsight I guess it wasn't so bad.
I've been in good health ever since.

Honestly, cervical cancer is one of the most avoidable cancers out there. What's important about what you said is she has "pre-cancerous cells". They are not cancer. The reason we women are supposed to go yearly for paps is to catch the pre-cancerous cells before they become anything worse. So this is a good thing that your friend is having this done.
The doctor will go in, scrape all the bad cells out of her cervix and they will test them. What they want to see is that all the "margins" (the edges of what cells they took out) are clear. Meaning all the edges have normal cells in them. That would mean that they got all the pre-cancerous cells.
Your friend will just have to go for paps every 6 months going forward. I am on that plan for life now! Just means I have to get naked from the waist down 1 extra time per year!
It's wonderful that you are concerned about your friend. My advice to you would be try to not tell her how scared you are because it might make her more nervous. She will be fine!

Re: LEEP Procedure
Thanks so much for the info!
I haven't told her how I feel...I'm trying ot be supportive and positive...
After the leep is done. do they re-look at those cells? Is it possible they can see something different in the cells then?

They do a follow up to see how she's healing and then regular paps to check for abnormalities...so basically everything goes back to normal afterwards. Your friend will be okay.

What they will probably do is test the cells that they removed from her to make sure they got it all out. If it comes back that all the pre-cancerous cells were removed they will probably have her back in 3 months for a follow up pap. She will have to get checked more regularly, but those regular paps will show any abnormal cells again.
I know for me, I think I had to go back every 3 months for a year. Then I went on the every 6 month schedule.

Re: LEEP Procedure
I had one done years ago. I felt a bit crampy the next day , nothing more.
The procedure itself wasn't scary at all. I went to a Dr. Who does them awake, it was maybe 20 minutes if that.
She will be ok.
Like a PP said, she will need more constant paps after.
