Les Miserables
I didn't have a chance to really explain how amazing it was b/c I was so shocked by our Friday's experience (lol) but before we saw the show we saw at Friday's - we saw Les Mis in the City.
It was UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE... and I have seen it before numerous times but this was a first for DH and it has been a while since my last show.
Anyone seen it recently?
The three male leads blew me AWAY - Valjean, Javert and Marius were FANTASTIC. I have never cried so much and I was SOBBING during "Bring Him Home". I felt like I was the only blubbering idiot crying but then I looked around and everyone was balling - the show was out of this world and we were three rows, center, from the stage... I spent the whole show in goosebumps.
Best Anniversary present everrrrr!!!

Nope...I was bored also. Except during the performance of "On My Own"...that song is so pretty. Otherwise, .

oh god!
well, i guess it depends on the "type" of broadway person you are. i'm not into the circus, i'm not into the singing and dancing and "numbers" with people kicking their heels up... and my mom and sister love ALL broadway - but i need it to be more "realistic" i guess is the word??
i just hate the over dramatic showboat crap - so i *think* that is why the only show i really like is les mis... it actually happened, it is real, these poor people suffered and the story of jean valjean is just amazing - what he went through and what a good person he was...
and then the music and the words - you get like, attached to these characters and it is very emotional for me - i was never into chorusline, cats, 42nd street, etc etc...
i've tried to see other shows and i always end up at the drama of it all - even jersey boys - like, enough with the big singing and jokes lol - so i think that MAY be why you guys didn't like it - you may like more of the other type of broadway - very entertaining and glitzy - and i can understand b/c my mom and sister love that too... but i guess i'm just more into the heart of it - b/c i have no tolerance for any other show hahaha.
there are def two diff types of broadway people, in my expert opinion

Re: Les Miserables
i think its a pretty great show---seen it once on broadway. i just love the songs so much.
i just love broadway in general though. like i loved miss saigon, jekyll & hyde, showboat, ave. q., etc.
the only show i did NOT like was "Dracula" and it was one of those things where i got tix when it was in previews....and it did NOT last long at all. only a few wks. and i'm not talking about that lestat one with elton john's music--i mean another one that suuuucked!

Re: Les Miserables
I'm glad you enjoyed it!!!!!
I'm one of the Les Mis haters. I wanted to see it for years...several years ago FH took me and it was . I thought it was ok. I didn't see what the big deal was...
And I disagree with Dani's assessment in saying she likes this because she doens't like schmaltzy Broadway. I like more serious theatre. I see 50.50 between plays and musicals, and even the musicals we see are more serious (last one I believe was Company...no it was Altar Boyz Off B'way, but it's not schmaltzy or serious).
I actually think Les Mis is one of the MORE schmaltzy musicals. It's all about the HUGE cast and the big moving sets and huge production numbers. I understand it's not like 42nd street or something with people kicking up their heels, but I think it's a lot of spectacle. The story is a very personal one, but they make it into such a huge spectacle. I am not a Les Mis fan, it's actually one of the few things I've seen that I didn't like, because I like almost everything on some level

Re: Les Miserables
I LOVE Les Mis. It is one of my favorite Broadway musicals. I also love Phantom and Miss Saigon. I have seen Miss Saign 8 times, including a performance with Lea Salonga as Kim. I want to go see Les Mis again SO badly!!

Re: Les Miserables
I love Les Mis. I saw it for the fourth time (1st time since 1997) in October, and it was amazing. I had front row seats on the right side, it was an amazing perspective. I love everything about Les Mis - the music, the story, the huge production values. It just draws me in from the first note to the last.
To add to the conversation about types of Broadway lovers, I'm pretty eclectic. My top 3 favorites are Les Mis, Phantom and Rent, but I also love Avenue Q, Wicked, Aida, Beauty and the Beast, and classics like The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof and Oklahoma.

Re: Les Miserables
I saw it a while ago, too. I loved the song, "Castle on a Cloud" and "On My Own."
Whenever I see a musical, I wish I could perform and sing like that.
Oh, I loved the film version with Liam Neeson. This adaptation was really helpful explaining Valjean's and Javert's relationship -- and how Valjean was such a good man inside.
ETA: The film version with Liam Neeson, not Gerard Depardieu, is the one I liked.
