Leslie, Liza or anyone who works with the DD or SpEd adult community.

I need some help for my brother. He is in his 30s and we have sought services from AHRC. He was turned down b/c he is not DS and is considered too high functioning. I think in addition to his diagnosis, he may be somewhere on the spectrum. My questions are:
other than AHRC, what resources do we have available;
How hard it is to have a re-diagnosis so he can get the proper services.

Please feel free to FM me.

This is just a thought....

My daughter attends camp through the JCC. (She has DS you saw her at the GTG?)They have a TON of services for the disabled etc.

I dont know if they have something for your brother but it might be worth the phone call.

The # for the Suffolk Y JCC is 462-9800. Im not sure if you are in Nassau or Suffolk. If you are in Nassau you can call Sid Jacobsons.

your brother might not be able to get services through OMRDD as you need to be diagnosed before the age of 22.
I am not sure what other services there will be outhere for him.

do u mean DS as in down syndrome? That isnt the case for AHRC. You dont have to be down syndrome to go to AHRC. AHRC does deny alot of people for various other reasons. I am a SW for UCP. I can fax you an applic on tues and fill it out and I can look into day hab/ day treatment. I have tons of respurces on my desk for you. Just to name a few agencys to look into...
Maryhaven
IGHL
Center for Developmental Disabilities
Family residences
developmental Disabilities institute
There are many more.
I would have to know his age and level of funct. and details of case.

Here are a few links that you might find helpful! All of these agencies offer adult services and would most likely be able to help if he should need a reevaluation. Chat Icon

OMG thank you so much everyone.

I will admit that although I was at the initial appointment at AHRC, I was not there for the follow up and I think what my mother has told me is tainted by her emotions. I do think however that he may be somewhere on the spectrum b/c some of his behaviours, and I think that it might be time for a re-eval. I am pretty sure he has not had one since High School almost 15 years ago.

Thank you so much everyoneChat Icon

Try the DDSO (DEV. Dis Services Office) for Long Island...they can provide you with the necessary information. Keep in mind OMRDD services are very strict and just b/c someone has a certain IQ score, this does not necessarily qualify them for services. Also, taken into account is functioning level.

DDSO
631-434-6000

They will be able to give you information about MR services on Long Island. let me know if you need any other assistance...

I had a feeling you were going to say there were behaviors bc ive heard this time and time again in re: to AHRC not accepting. Get a new psych eval and a current psychosocial and send out applic. Speaking of which does he have a serv coordinator?

No I don't believe so. I was looking through all the papers that my mom has compiled through the years & it seems that other than the attorney that got hi the SSI 10 years ago he has had nothing.

I am so embarrassed that I have no idea how to help him, I just know that he is regressing in a big way and something needs to happen now.
