Lessons learned from a first-time weed whacker

1. Don't wear your nice sneakers while whacking weeds.
2. Expect there to be as many grass bits on your pants below your knees as on the underside of the whacker.
3. Don't try to drink a cup of water immediately after. Your trembling muscles just can't handle it.
4. You should have gotten something longer than a 50 foot extension cord so you could reach all of your property.
5. Do this more often so the matted down chives lining the driveway don't pepper you with wet bits.
6. Look behind you so the next time you catch the end of the string on that piece of flagstone, the loud noise doesn't scare you and make you fall over backwards. (yes, landed right on my @ss, too)
7. Forget all of the above and get your husband to do it.

BTDT. I dread getting it out of the shed again.

What's up with rule 7? Hahahah

I got a black and decker rechargable weed whacker because I didn't want to deal with the cord mess.

DW learned lesson 7 very early on.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have a gas trimmer, so I don't worry about cords. (Yes, I know... it's not very "green", but I bought it years ago before rechargeables were around, or at least before they were any good, and the corded ones have problems with the cords, and it was before I really got into the "green" idea....)

We have a gas one for the same reasons...

Add to that list:

Rule 8: Watch out for the trunk on the brand new tree you had planted. It's probably not a good thing to keep wacking off chunks of bark.

Re: Lessons learned from a first-time weed whacker

Yeah, I checked out Consumer Reports and Amazon reviews before I bought this one. I'm rethinking the corded idea right now, but I'll give it a chance first. It really wasn't that expensive and I'm sure I could find someone who needs it.

Gerty, that's a good rule. Chat Icon I have a small birch in front of the house and although the cord didn't reach anyway Chat Icon I put curved brick scalloped edging around it to avoid damage to it from the mower or trimmer.

DON'T DO IT!!! DH weed whacked half my plants thinking they were weeds Chat Icon That's my OTHER problem with perennials, if it doesn't have a flower on it he thinks it's a weed! I have to work on getting a stone border for all my gardens…

Believe it or not, if we were to tour our grounds, he would probably be able to name 90% of the things growing there. Ditto for the names of all the birds that visit our feeders.

He used to be able to name my orchids too... Latin names too like Cattleya maxima and Neofinetia Falcata. Chat Icon

I'm planning on bordering any plantings with some kind of edging so he knows where to stop. Planting beds are my domain until I specifically tell him what to do. Chat Icon
